Going to Baton Rouge Zoo for the first time this weekend, tell me what to expect

I've heard some horror stories about the neighborhood. Will we be safe? Should I leave the Kevlar at home or bring it?

you've heard horror stories about Baker?

It's a dump now but is about to be remodeled. It's not in a great neighborhood but you'll be fine.

Is this a mall joke or are you going to the actual zoo?

They don't give the animals ammo.

Lions and tigers and bears....

The zoo is Not a good neighborhood, but you won’t feel unsafe driving in and out and walking to and from your car. Kevlar is definitely unnecessary. You’re not going to get mugged trying to go to the zoo.
What you will experience is a fairly underwhelming, poorly maintained zoo without many of thr classic zoo animals you’d hope to see (no elephants).
However, it’s not expensive, not crowded, and fairly shady, which comes in handy on hot summer days.
It’s a decent way to entertain a kid.

Somehow this thread will result in several bans

Just stick to the LSU area or anything south of the mall and you should be fine

We go about 5 times a year
We are members because of our 2 year old
Zoo is in really bad shape
Grounds and habitats are very poor
Not many animals left besides monkeys and birds
Neighborhood is what it is... it's in Baker
You'll be safe inside the zoo though, no worries

Don’t leave anything valuable in your car

Very few patrons from NBR, although they will claim differently.

I’m 100% convinced that BREC has purposely run the zoo into the ground to justify spending money to move and build a new zoo and convince taxpayers to support a millage increase to do so.

You will be fine but probably disappointed. As others have said the zoo is in not great shape. If you can go to Audubon its well worth it.
