I'm up for a raise because of new credentials. As a part of it I've been told that they want to switch me to salary. I'm not sure I see the advantage... won't be able to get overtime, won't be able to roll out once I hit 40 hours in a week like I do now. So what are the advantages of being salary??

Pros: ok to show up a tad late, taking a longer lunch, leaving a little early.

Cons: enjoy working Saturdays for free.

I went from Salary to Hourly here recently. I'll never do salary again. I make so much in over time and I love it. I'm still trying to find out why some people would rather salary

PTO. Is that a thing with hourly pay?

Stable income is useful in budgeting and planning. And being able to work 35 hours on a slow week and still get 40 hours of pay.

I go home at 3 when I've covered my workload for the day (happens very often for me). I get paid the same as if I stayed until 5. When work gets slow, I still get paid the same instead of being asked to reduce hours. I couldn't imagine doing the opposite. Not because I mean to put down hourly.....just never had to do it. Would be strange.

You can roll out at 25 hours and still get paid for 40

They want to give you a 15% raise, but then expect you to work 60 hours a week and not pay you for 33% of them.

I worked salary once. ONCE. Billable hours all the way from here on out. I work, I get paid. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, not gonna get fooled again.

Are they changing you from non-exempt to exempt? In some cases, the company doesn't really have a choice. They must categorize you based on the type of job you perform following federal guidelines. If you're miscategorized, your company can be in violation of labor laws.

Yeah...a lot of our hourly people don't understand just how much money can be made in bonuses and stock. I make very significant money in bonuses and stock. I doubt there's a single person who is hourly in our company (major corporation) that gets a bonus and is hourly.

Now our hourly guys make a ton more than me. They just work a lot of hours for it. And when the recession hit, a lot of them had to tighten the purse strings when the fact that their money wasn't guaranteed came rearing it's ugly head.

They may deem you a salaried employee but if your "non-exempt" you will still be paid hourly.

Yea a lot of people can't see the forest for the trees.

It definitely feels like a pay cut when you move to salary and aren't eligible for OT. But its much better long term.

I would say that is a big one if it doesnt apply to hourly. I did Salary when I first got into the construction industry and it sucked. Was working 60-65 hours a week for the same money I was working 40. Fortunately I was put on an out of state job that they were willing to pay straight time for salary employees in OT. It helped, but still sucked.

Get paid for doing your job now instead of how long it takes you to do your job.

Depending on the job, that's a blessing or a curse.
