According to the OT, no one wants this and none of the automakers working on self driving cars have done any market research on this issue.

Anyone who thinks autonomous cars won't be the norm within 30 years is clueless.

Why? Liability would go down markedly for human drivers.

The pool of human drivers will shrink drastically. Liability costs will be spread across a much smaller group of people. Rates will skyrocket for those who continue to drive their own cars.

Think about it. The amount of liability that will need to be answered for will go down dramatically. It's not like your numerator is staying the same. It's also plummeting.

Also, my earlier supposition had to do with the fact that a greater prevalence of self driving cars would lead to much safer roads overall, which minimizes the risk of human drivers causing wrecks.

I'm hoping in 30 years they'll have autonomous RV's. Being freshly retired and traveling the country sounds damn good to me

That’s totally different. How will the car physically navigate a drive through or find a parking spot without interacting?

I guess it would depend on the different rates of decline.

If the rate of adoption of autonomous cars abd the reduction of human caused wrecks were perfectly correlated, then I could see insurance rates remaining the same. But in the real world that probably won't be a perfectly correlated relationship.

We already have that technology.

I hate to be trite but it really is going to be based on supply demand. I am no actuary but I don't really see a reason that it would suddenly become cost prohibitive for the average American.

So how do autonomous cars handle differences of opinion about who has the right of way

Or who gets the open spot in traffic in a lane change situation with multiple cars wanting the same hole

It doesn’t have a steering wheel or pedal? I still don’t see how that is possible. It seems like there would be times when you had to take over and manually get out of some situations

Airliners autopilots are very good you know. Pilots still do some pilot stuff but the autopilots does lots of the pure flying.

Call me old fashioned but there's no way in hell I'm going over the I-10 Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge sitting in a car that doesn't have a steering wheel or a brake pedal. Nope. Nope. Nope.

No software test will be able to predict what happens when a human tries something stupid.

Program it like a human, who's reaction would be to try and avoid collisions as best as they could, and with the AI's superior reaction time and awareness it should perform better than a human. I do agree that it seems way too early for GM to be releasing this, but it's not like it's going on sale to regular people. The article said the plan was to be used in ride sharing service, so probably a controlled driving area in a local that is aware and ok with it.

Yeah, I'm going to let GM build me a car to ride in without a steering wheel and brakes.

The technology is already there. And it can sense if a dumb human is breaking right of way norms. It’s a nonissue if there are no humans driving.
