I work in for the IT arm of a US bank. We've got a huge backlog of work so we had to add five engineers. All five are contract hires from Mexico or Dominican Republic. They've done a good job so far but are undoubtedly getting paid less than us American employees. Folks who were laid-off and new grads are pitted against worldwide cheaper labor. Not a good time to be looking for a job.

This is how things have been for decades. What's really going to kill the job market is AI. Open AI released some stats on GPT4 today, it passed the Bar Exam with a top 10% score. GPT3.5, which is what Chat GPT is using, got bottom 10% scores. GPT4 scored top 20% or better on quite a few tests, LSAT, SAT, GRE. LINK

People thinking this will be like the Industrial Revolution and make people more productive don't realize just how many segments of the economy this tech will be able to perform in at above average human levels.

People are hiring everywhere.

For 15-20 / hr, which can barely pay rent and food for one person. Add a wife and/or kids and you’re screwed.

Part of your problem is that you are working in the banking industry as an SDE. Anyone who has years of experience as a SDE does not pursue a career in banking. Secondly, you are in New Orleans, Louisiana where salaries are way below industry standards for SDE’s, I mean way, way below.

Do you possess any AWS, Azure, GC skills? Python and SQL? You really should get out of Louisiana if you have any desire to make some real money as a SDE.

every one is hiring.

This probably won't last much longer.

But everyone is hiring.
There isn't a better time to look for a job than now (see last 12 months)

Is the company using these workers to clear the backlog? If so, why would the company hire permanent workers instead of temp workers? And American entitlement has grown so much in the past few years that I doubt they’d find many wanting a temp position for less money.

not a good time to be making demands about working remote either. Or your work/life balance. Or your mental health days. Or your "boundaries".

Go to work, snowflake, and work.

my company in just shut down our studio and laid off 45 employees and moving all jobs to Belgrade or Tel Aviv

it’s just cheaper and easier to hire artists, designers, engineers, data analysts, etc. overseas right now. It sucks

all QA analysts have been hired in Vietnam or Mexico for the last few years too

We used to make our own clothes. The rural South did textiles, we made Hanes and Russell and Van Heusen basic cotton shirts and things. This wasn't highly skilled, but the people made a middle class living and we bought them at American made prices. Once every factory had left the country and there was no domestic competition they even raised the prices back to the previous levels. And the shirts are much lower quality. The people laid off didn't vote for it, and that working class is just the opiate and meth class now. What exactly is better about it? We just committed suicide.
