I think Frey and Henley are two of the most overrated people in pop, certainly the two biggest assho egomaniacs

That's cause they're not Pop artists.

And who gives a F about their Egos, when they gave the world such an awesome catalog of Rock and Roll Country fusion that more than still stands the test of time 50 years later?

Ludicrous...
quote:

Key characteristics of pop music
Mainstream appeal: Pop music is designed to be accessible to a broad audience and is often promoted through mainstream channels like radio and television.
Catchy and repetitive structure: It features memorable melodies and a verse-chorus structure where the chorus is repeated multiple times to make it easy to sing along to.
Simple and accessible lyrics: Lyrical themes often focus on universal subjects like love and relationships, keeping the songs easy to understand and connect with.
Commercial goals: The genre is closely tied to the music industry and is often created with profitability in mind.
Malleable genre: Pop is not a static genre; it borrows heavily from other styles like rock, R&B, and electronic music, and its specific sound changes with each decade. For example, the pop music of the 80s sounds very different from 2010s pop music.
Focus on production: The production style emphasizes rhythm and harmony, often with a polished and danceable beat, though it can also include slow ballads.

So Hotel California
Life in the Fast Lane
Lyin Eyes
And Tequila Sunrise, just to name a few. Are simple, easy to understand, song structures with a Danceable Beat? LMFAO
You must prefer Vince Gill over Glenn Frey. And enjoy Gill trashing Frey's legacy.

I never understood the weird criticism of The Eagles. It was one of those things that became cool to do but never made any sense. I’m not saying they’re my favorite band or anything.

You can't argue with success, millions of people love or like them. I'm chiming in to admit to being the oddball. I never liked them as a teenager or young adult, I found them way too slick and calculated. They were technically perfect but left me cold. Again, no judgment- it just wasn't my thing. When I first saw Big Lebowski and he was denouncing the Eagles, it resonated with me as hilarious- finally there were others like me! Another thing I found hilarious about that scene is the black cab driver loved the Eagles so much he kicked the dude out of his cab for disliking them. As far as I can tell the Eagles did not have a very large black following, so that was part of the humor of the scene.

That said I always recognized their talent. And I actually like a lot of their solo stuff, much better than the Eagles ('Boys of Summer' by Henley, and his End of the Innocence album is a pop masterpiece; Walsh was a lot of fun and had great songs; Frey's 'You Belong to the City' is a beautiful song).

Another thing about those guys is if I'm not mistaken they were all from somewhere other than LA and moved there to be studio musicians. They were all people at the very top of their craft, and it showed in the music production values, the perfect singing, the note-perfect playing they did. It's amazing. But songwriting ability and charisma are the real difference makers. As I said, even though the Eagles were not to my personal taste, they had these qualities in droves. Sometimes I do play a few Eagles songs, it's an enjoyable listen that doesn't demand much from you. And there's a stadium concert from the 70s you can see on YouTube that is excellent and sounds just like their records- going back to their fundamental love/hate quality, because that's either a good thing or a bad one.

No doubt Joe Walsh added some styling and performance panache to that version of the Eagles, but the band was still rocking more than you think -- thanks to Don Felder.

Check out this ditty and its guitar licks (written and performed largely by Felder). I was shocked when I first heard it:

Your instinct is spot on. Blame the losers who wrote for Rolling Stone mag for that ridiculous smear.

If a band couldn't be "edgy", raw and vulgar, RS critics hated it. They especially hated the Eagles for their "oooohs" harmonies and lack of over the top guitar solos.

He gave us Hotel California. Didn't he play the solo?

I believe so, iirc, he came up with the hook and intro and Frye and Henley commandeered it from him

I think you're right to a great degree.

Bernie Leadon could do rock riffs and licks, but preferred country. Felder was beholden to Leadon, who introduced him to the band).

Felder + Walsh = Rock Upgrade

Was cleaning out my parents house last year and found an Eagles Their Greatest Hits Vinyl from 1976 still in the wrapping.

They were certainly a 2-man clique, weren't they. They were the reason every former member left....I always thought it was a damn shame that Frey wouldn't allow himself (apparently) to at least make amends with Felder before he (Frey) passed.

I despise Rolling Stone

777 nothing wrong with Poco, they were a great group, and some of the genesis of the Eagles comes from Poco.
