I'm still looking at a CrossTrek for my next car. One of the roomier crossovers (drivers seat) and the best off-road performance.
I bought a 2018 Crosstrek Premium with a 6 speed manual last year. Have almost 9k miles on it. I've taken it off-road on a few occasions, and its actually done really well.
It has almost 9 inches of ground clearance. Absolutely no regrets at all purchasing it.

This stereotype is getting old, I know tons of men that drive them, they simply great cars. In the Pacific Northwest almost nothing else is allowed on the road. 250K miles is just the break in period for a Subaru

Subaru made by Toyota so of course it's a great car by the only standard that really matters - reliability.
Like Cosmo has already said, you've come to the wrong place for advice.

I test drove a WRX when i was car shopping and it was pretty awesome. But I don't really know if it's an outdoorsy car per se.
Ended up with a new Crosstrek and I love it.
ETA: I live in California, where there are actual mountains and snow that necessitates all wheel drive, and where lots of people drive subarus so they're widely accpepted. You won't get made fun of by the 5'7 little men in the F250s

What?

I think Toyota owns a good bit of subaru stock, but they don't "make" them.

Toyota owns 16% of Fuji Heavy Industries which is the parent company of Subaru. Toyota proposed the joint venture of the (code named) 86 car with Subaru with the latter developing the engine. The resulting car is the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ which is built by Subaru in Japan.
Their operations are run identically as well with the same manufacturing concepts.

Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) is changing its name to Subaru Corporation in April 2017 and there’s more changes coming that will benefit consumers. Subaru wants to strengthen its brand name and the Japanese automaker is also deepening the product development partnership forged with fellow Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota owns 16 percent of FHI and Subaru will reap benefits from the alliance. Fuji Heavy president Yasuyuki Yoshinaga spoke with The Nikkei recently and revealed what’s coming. What will it mean for consumers? Subaru will stop making the Camry sedan for Toyota at its Indiana plant next month. They will be able to start producing more Subaru Outbacks on the same assembly line. This will improve supply issues and consumers won’t have to wait for delivery of their new wagon. Subaru will also begin producing the new 2017 Impreza compact later this year in Indiana for the first time. A new 3-Row Subaru crossover is also in the works for 2018.

Toyota collaborated with Subaru on the 86 (FRS/BRZ), but that car mechanically is all Subaru.
Toyota is not directly involved with Subaru's other cars.

My dad said when he was a teen he had a jacked up Jeep and he would always get stuck or break down while riding with his friends...
And my grandfather would show up in his 4wd Subaru and pull him out with ease. Said it always embarrassed the shite out of him

All ive done to my 2008 forester are a brake job, power steering belt change, and oil changes (and tires duh) . Literally. And it has the trouble head gasket engine. Nothing has gone wrong with the engine but at over 100k now I'm spending $2200 for timing belt, all other belts, pullies, water pump and head gasket rebuild.
I'm driving it to Atlanta from Montana in Aug and selling our 2017 Sportwagen (which is a great car) just to reduce the fleet.
We also have a Subaru Ascent, which is a great tow vehicle and all-terrain people/dogs mover.
The lesbian thing is a product of deep south folk who just remember the "can i kick the tires" commerical or are too young and untraveled to know better.

Thinking of getting a wrx.
Get one. Drove a guys hatchback back in college. It was a blast. I'd buy one for commuting if I had a far drive.

I had an Outback and I guess I got a lemon. Thing was constantly in the shop for this or that. Took a bath on it when I finally sold it. I'll never buy another Subaru.
