Getting ticket reduced to non-moving violation - Covington
Posted on 5/8/26 at 9:58 pm

Got a ticket for going through a yellow (turned red while under the light) in Covington.
Anyone know the process for reducing this to a non-moving violation? Do I contact the DA before the court date, and if so is this an in-person meeting?
Or do I show up on the court date and offer to pay court costs, take a defensive driving class or plead article 984?
ETA: perfect driving record for over 20 yrs

Call the DA in a few weeks and ask, no rush since it will take time for it to sync to their system. They may tell you to come on court date and ask but Ive never had a DA deny me moving my tickets to a non-moving violation.
The first speeding ticket I ever got was in my early 20s, and I had absolutely no idea how any of it worked. I figured “court” meant I should dress up, so I showed up looking professional while everyone around me was in pajamas or work uniforms.
When my turn came, the prosecutor actually thanked me for taking it seriously and dressing respectfully. He knocked $150 off my fine, changed it to a non-moving violation, and even complimented me for caring about how I presented myself that day.

Call DA if not use article 894 not 984.

You should be able to call but still need to appear in court I think.

Don’t use your 894 on this. You will meet
someone from the DA’s office on your court date. They will most likely move it to a non moving violation.

I guess Covington or St. Tammany DA does not know how to grift this.
Several years ago, I got a ticket up in Madison Parish for 72 in a 55. Within a week or two, I got a letter from the Madison Parish DA's office. It told me my fine for speeding ($185 I think) and explained how a moving violation could go on my record and could cause my insurance to go up for several years. Then explained that if I read the attached letter and checked off that I understand the items, sign and send a separate check made out to DA Traffic for $175, the violation would be reduced to a non-moving violation.
I felt like this was straight up extortion, but I sent two cashier's checks with the letter.

Does your small mind allow you to grasp the concept of people getting speeding tickets in places other than where they live?
You live in an apartment, be careful using the trashy word.

Just wait a week and call the number listed on the ticket and ask how much it is going to be and ask if there is a way that you can keep from raising your insurance by some kind of defensive driving class held on a Saturday. They will typically offer a “safety diversion program”, which basically means you make a check payable directly to the DA.
It sounds crooked as hell, but is very common way of keeping it off your record (which is your goal).

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but what you are describing is not illegal as long as you entered the intersection before the light changed from yellow to red

You are completely wrong. It has nothing to with when you enter the intersection. You have to completely clear the intersection before it turns red.
Don't feel bad it seems like most drivers on the road today believes there's a five second grace period after the light turns red.

It was Covington PD? Mind sharing the location of the red light?

Call the DA or Sheriff's office. They check and see if you qualify and you will if not used in the last 3 years or so. Pay the fine and perhaps another $40 to watch defensive driveing course on line. Once all of this completed the ticket will not go on your driving record.
You can call them Monday for exact details.

St. Tammany sheriff deputies can give two shits about running red lights yet you get a ticket as the light goes from yellow to red. This has to be Covington PD I would guess.
I was following a sheriff deputy on Hwy 190 yesterday. 190 has the U turns where you can proceed after stop on a red light. This is fine in proper practice but is way out of hand with people having no hesitation pulling in front of someone going 45-55mph. We cruising at 50mph and a dude makes the U turn with no stopping in front of the Sheriff deputy and the little bitch deputy does nothing.
