Just respond in a way like you don't really understand what being laid off is. Like respond with, "will this affect my paycheck". Or a "Man this is going to make going to the office next week awkward, do I have to like sit at a different desk or something".

My company is going through a massive layoff. They haven’t announced it but all signs indicate tomorrow is the day. They aren’t going to send out emails. They will call me since I live out of state from the main office My supervisor is a pretty good dude and he will be the one to call. What’s something funny I could say to him? I know it sounds weird but this bums me out so I might as well try to have some fun with him? I already started looking for another job since last week we figured out most of us were going to get laid off.

Tell him you were just about to call him and put in your two weeks notice for a new job you were hired for, but now you're glad he beat you to the punch and you still get your severance pay.

Be professional, ask if you can use him as a reference. Don’t burn any bridges. And hopefully you are getting a decent severance package.

This is the way.

He hasn’t responded back to anyone and today’s the day. Maybe it went differently than he expected.

Maybe he's in the Mafia. In the Mafia, they don't call or email you to tell you that you're laid off. They just kill you.

RIP OP. You were a man's man.

Ask him about a reference and remain professional. It is really not your concern at this point but he probably hates to do what he is doing almost as bad as you hate what's being done.

I was set up as a temporary foreman over a crew of Electricians when I was 22 years old. They had a "culling" the first Thursday and I had to lay off the one hand they were culling. When he saw me coming just before lunch with some paperwork he told me "if that's a pink slip and a check you better carry it in your mouth". When I asked him why he said "because you going to need both hands when I start whipping your arse"! I was, of course, green as a gourd at the time....I fully expected him to do just as he said he would....after a good 30 seconds, an eternity, the rest of the crew busted out laughing and slapping me on the back like I was in on the joke and not the brunt of it.....

How did the phone call go?

This happened to me last year. I knew I was on the list. Used ChatGPT to develop a list of questions to ask about severance, payouts, equipment. Popped the list of 25 questions into the teams meeting chat before they started to speak. Threw the HR guy off his script. He had a dozen or so follow-up items. They handed me over to VP of HR to clean up the process.

I had Teams IM messages and emails tee’d up that went out to my team and to a larger group. Thanking them, pleasure working with you, here is my contact info. Sent those out during the layoff meeting before they cut my access.

Don’t burn any bridges. Download all your files.

I was correct. Boss just called a short while ago and since I got his number in my phone I knew it was him. Before he could say anything I went with “Hey, Mr Jetstream 2000’s boss, so glad you reached out. This is about my annual bonus, right? I was wondering when you were going to let me know!” Awkward silence then I started laughing and said, hey boss, I’m just messing with you, I know you’ve had to make a lot of these calls today and I just wanted to lighten it up. I’m sorry you are having to do this but I understand and then from there was professional about the company, the experience, and asked for future references if needed. Once he realized I was pulling his leg about the bonus he laughed out loud and told me that this was one of the hardest days he’s had in his professional career and very much appreciated me trying to make this easier for him.

I appreciate all you twisted souls out in OT land. All your comment have put a smile on my face when otherwise I’d been depressed on myself. I know this will work out. I’ve got friends in other companies reaching out to bosses for opportunities for me.

I love how this place beats the shite out of each other on a regular basis but when someone is down you all pull together to lift them up.

I'll pay you $20 to weed eat around my pond. I know it's fresh but 20 bucks is 20 bucks.

good luck in your hunt, most of the time this stuff works out for the better.

Jet this is Bob

Hey bob what a coincidence, I just happened to drive by your house yesterday. You got a beautiful wife and kids.

You may get a restraining order slapped on you but the thought that you could hurt his family will give you the upper hand during the call.

Good luck! In my experience these things usually wind up with people winding up in a better place. Keep your head up and treat finding a new position like you are on a strict deadline at your old position....

I once worked for an Israeli based company. They had this VP layoff our entire division. Then they fired her 2 days later.
