Getting hit up by the grocery cashier for a donation?

Checking out of the grocery line and was asked by the cashier if I would like to make a donation to a local high school. I simply said no. Everyone around froze, and stared as if I insulted someone. Things got awkward, and I exited the store with my groceries and a stigma as being a tight arse cheapskate who would deny the local high school funds.

Should we all just say yes, or should stores not be asking for donations?

I say yes the first time and "already donated" every time after that.

Until you get proof that your dollar enters that school's bank account, no.

Albertson's is irritating because their chip machine asks, "Donate to the Hungry?" in the amount of 1, 2, and 5 dollars.

What if that money goes to the Rouge Collection?

I don't believe that happened. I heard a guy say "frick no" one time and no one made a peep.

You're probably imagining things.

It’s not charity if you’re being pressured to do it.

frick them.

Just donate some money

I swear some of you people don’t realize how fortunate you are. What’s fricking 10 bucks for some family to get some canned green beans

You do make donations. They're called taxes.

It is very annoying, I will admit that. It's just as annoying as using a card when ordering food at a counter and they ask for a tip. I only tip at restaurants, and even then, I don't like to do it.

I say no. Never felt guilty or judged.

A good response to the cashier would be “I’ll donate $10 if you personally match it right now”.

The local Publix is constantly asking for a donation for this or that. They do it so frequently that just saying "no, thank you" has become very easy.

I politely decline every time and have never had so much as a second glance. Either your tone grabbed people’s attention or you imagined it to be worse than it was.

I decline our United Way fund drives at work every year too. Yes, I'm the guy that kills the 100% participation goal or I donate $1 one time. Come at me.

I always answer with a cheery smile "Not today!" and no one bats an eye.

Next time ask the Cashier if they'd like to donate $10 to you or your charity.

Grocery store, CAPITOL One, breastaurants... I get asked for a donation at all of them. I have no problem saying no with a smile.
