Very seldom am I bothered while on vacation. I usually send out an email with any issues that need to be known about. Maybe a quick text asking about something giving them issues I dealt with before and a simple reply usually fixes them up. If I’m on vacation and I’m on call the days before or after said vacation days, 99% of the time someone else pulls my call and I pay them back by pulling theirs at a later date. If they don’t wanna work it, I gotta do it. But that has never happened long as I’ve been there.

I was the controller for 7 years of a company growing 40% annually until sale. Never took a call on vacation

The first Monday? I was ok w a few calls from the company. Customers? Most I could jet know I was out of pocket and they were ok w waiting a few days.

To be bombarded by people that know you are on vacation? That would suck. Maybe the guy being called didn’t do a good job updating his projects or such prior? But if they are just calling, that’s disrespectful to him and his family

Nail on head. I spend more waking hours with these people than I do with my own family. And that's why off is the direction in which they can frick when I'm on vacation

What's the OT's take on this? Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?

Most of the time I just reply "I'm off this week"

Definitely not answering phone calls when I'm off

look how much work I do FOR FREE

I had a supervisor many years ago that wanted me and a few others to come in to finish some orders that needed to get out since we were backed up and OT got cut out. Dude legit said "Can't pay you, just come in and work for free...I am". I legit laughed and just said "No, thanks".

I then was told I wasn't a "team player". No one but him came in. He also didn't get paid.

I worked at two places that would do this. Companies absolutely did not give a shite about your family time.

My last company, I wasn't even out of the airport with the rental car and my boss was pinging my phone 3-4 times every 20 minutes asking me for things.

Needless to say I left there quickly after learning my lesson from the prior company.

And at some point it becomes a management issue. If you can't go on vacation without being disturbed (unless it's a major issue) then that's on management to make sure they have enough folks to cover (or have to cover themselves).

This is one of the negatives of "unlimited" PTO.

Yep. It's nice to have the autonomy, but certainly there are times where taking a block of time without bother (or better yet, leaving everything at the office for the night/weekend) is pretty appealing.

I work in an organizational structure that allows me to unplug, for the most part, for vacation. I do understand that it will not always be that way and that other companies are not that way.

I am encouraged to cross train, to eliminate single threading of processes, and am given the tools to do so. For this, I am thankful and will do what I can when needed, even on vacation. I will also acknowledge that it doesn't happen often.

We try to make it a point to not call employees when on PTO. It does happen sometimes, but my goal is to avoid it when possible. I feel it important to be able to disconnect form work when needed.

Controller is just the captain of the back office.

My vacation days are really only partial days. At a certain point in the organizational food chain you have to be available. The decision I make and those that need my input don’t stop just because I’m on vacation.

Sounds like you need to reevaluate your priorities

I think it depends on work/vacation.

Some things cannot wait until after vacation. The week before vacation should be spent sorting all items out so that they are not left open while you are out.

Same. If I get called on vacation something is major wrong, but it does happen occasionally. I purposely don't bring my laptop with me though.

It’s give/take for me

I’ll answer calls/emails while on vacation but I’ll also leave at noon on a Tuesday without using pto if a buddy calls me to play golf and I don’t have anything urgent

Yeah you know, making sure processes are in place to keep people and vendors paid, collect debts, etc. No big deal

I'm customer facing and 100% commission now, and good enough and secure enough in my job that my owners respect me enough not to bother me when I'm not here
