Germany's Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival held every year in Munich, will not take place in 2021 due to the coronavirus crisis, officials said on Monday.

The pandemic has forced the cancellation of the hugely popular festival for the second consecutive year. It had been scheduled from September 18 to October 3.

The decision was made by Bavarian state Premier Markus Söder and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter. Söder said that Oktoberfest is the "most global" festival there is, and that the pandemic is not yet under enough control to allow people from all over the world to gather in tents.

"In the classic beer tents at the big festivals, social distancing, masks and other measures are practically impossible to implement," Söder said.

"The situation is too precarious," he added. "Imagine there was a new wave and it then became a superspreader event. The brand would be damaged forever and we don't want that."

Germans

ETA. Maybe don’t play BREXIT politics with the readily available AstraZeneca vaccine when you’ve completely flubbed your own rollout and need all the doses you can get.

So he’s scared of cancel culture, not the actual virus itself.

Is a crisis better or worse than a pandemic?

Going at that same time. Not looking good.

Specifically wanted to do Christmas Markets. We may have to cancel.

How tf is Europe not going to have a large enough % of their people inoculated/vaccinated by then?

Stupid. They can't say for sure that it will be unsafe 6 months from now.

Europe, and Germany in particular, are doing an absolutely atrocious job of getting people vaccinated.

They also let refugees in waves enter the country, largely unvaccinated so that doesn't help.

Germany only has like 8% fully vaccinated I think

Germany also made the decision to distribute vaccinations to "help the world" instead of focusing on their own citizens. Globalism!

Christmas Markets are a really big thing in Germany and they are quite elaborate and rowdy.

My wife has always wanted to go to a few of them and we have several friends living in Germany.

One of the best memories I have of living in Germany was hitting up the various weihnachtsmarkt. Obviously went to the one every year I lived in Heidelberg and Schweinfurt, but also made it to the one in Nuremberg and Rothenburg. The coolest was Rothenburg mainly because it still has its entire medieval wall intact. Nuremberg was just massive.
