Dad just got arrested.

This is the second time in recent history a parent has been arrested, if what parents know and the lack of parenting are going to factor into to the arrest of mothers and fathers then it needs to be done all the way. If that’s what people want, then it can’t be selective, it needs to be across the board. If these people can be arrested then so can all the single mothers who have children that are killing each other on a daily basis. If you really want change then start arresting the parents/guardians of the inner city kids that kill because of disrespect on social media.

It wouldn’t be appropriate to let any kid have access at will to guns without adult supervision, regardless if he has mental problems.

So you wouldn’t allow your 16 yr old kids access to home gun protection when home alone if you feel they are appropriately trained and disciplined?

Oh he gone. Might as well just go walk straight to prison and not return.

And that’s why I have no problem with him being charged at this point.

That’s straight up negligence by the parent at that point.

I'm not arguing in favor of the father, especially given the kid's history, but I definitely was gifted firearms when I was that kid's age or younger - 30/30 rifle, 20 gauge shotgun etc.

Not an AR-15 necessarily, but I don't think a high school kid or even younger being given a firearm as a gift is all that uncommon in rural areas or with hunters etc.

How old are you? Kids are not nearly as mature at 14 today as they were 30-40 years ago.

My guess is you were maybe also taught the appropriateness of when and how to use those firearms.

I thought the family was questioned this past May?

No, the online posts and interview with local sheriff's office occurred in May 2023 (the kid was 13 and finishing 7th grade!!!). 8th grade year apparently went by without any issues (except getting the gun for Christmas). Kid was a student at West Jackson Middle School in Hoschton, Georgia. Apparently the family (or parent and son, looks like there was a nasty divorce at some point) moved to the neighboring county (Barrow) and the kid enrolled in the high school on the outskirts of Winder.

Google maps shows it is roughly 15 miles from the old middle school to the new high school, but I doubt they managed a permissive transfer across county lines/school systems.

Jesus. Yeah maybe the kid needed to learn appropriateness of knowing not to shoot up and murder people at his school.

Or

Or

Kid is mentally fricking I’ll whether be 14 or 23. You can’t not give your trans kid a weapon cause he’s woke gay and trans or else that would be discrimination.

I owned 3 firearms by the time I was 14. They actually weren’t kept in a safe either. I didn’t shoot up a school.

I was only ever allowed to touch my gun in the presence of my Father.

We shot skeet and would dove hunt often. Waterfowl since as long as I can remember with my Uncle.

14 year olds are a year away from having a full time job. The kid wasn’t 6.

I am not advocating he should have free access to firearms, and the 20+ that I own now are in safes, with my bedside gun in a biometric safe. I am just pushing back at your argument about kids are not old enough to own firearms. Of course they are. This, like nearly every fricking problem in this country, is about mental health and shitty parenting.

Maybe we should extend abortion laws until fetuses hit puberty.

I said access “at will”. That means access all the time.

What the frick are you babbling about? Nobody has mentioned this kid being trans. Everyone here agrees that the kid from a mental health perspective didn’t need to be around guns. I was responding to a poster who said he had guns by 14 thirty something years ago.

And yes, MATURITY matters as well.

You’re saying completely dumb shite. That’s what.

Like this 14 yr old was simply missing the learning of appropriateness of shooting people with a rifle.

Owning and having access to the gun whenever a child likes are two different things, right?
