The article is confusing. So was this a mistake? If not, was it meant to be used as a racist term? Because they could have been talking about the animal.
There are black people in rural areas around where I live who have signs in their yard "fresh coons for sale". They kill and clean raccoons.

My grandfather used to refer to the Atlanta Falcons as the "Falcoons".. eventually that got shortened to "the coons"...as in Im going to the "coons game" sunday.

Technically, but I’ve never met someone who was offended by it and use it in conversation pretty often with little ill will
