What's the OT's take on this? Are brand name medicines worth the price premium?

I switched from Claritin to the CVS brand and find it to work just as good if not better.

Do your research. Some are literally the same, the only difference being the brand, others not so much. Most things are the same i believe though.

Really makes no difference. Only medication that I remember being routinely prescribed as brand name was Synthroid because the common dosages were so small.

If the percentage of the active ingredient is the same, I don't hesitate to pick up the generic brand.

Buy generic every time you can. They are the same as brand name medicine, chemically that is. FDA requires this. If you buy brand name then you just want to look like an OT baller.

The OT doesn't do shitty drugs, and they certainly aren't worried about how much something costs.

The generic has to have a +99% likeness (I think that percentage is correct) of the active ingredient to the name brand to get approved. This is provided that they are being sold as the same concentration of active in the product.

The primary difference is the "other stuff" in the pill. There can be some difference in how the active ingredient is delivered, how quickly it gets absorbed, etc. That's what makes the difference in generic vs brand for most people.

But most companies just reverse engineer it from the name brand since they have to post all the ingredients on the box. It is real easy for pharma companies to do it, just the paper work and wait time from the FDA is usually the limiting factor.

I take this. Most of the doctors I have gone to have said to get the name brand over the generic.

Get the generic if you can.

And I've worked in healthcare/pharmaceutical advertising for 16 years.

I generally take allergy meds and reflux meds and I have never seen a bit of difference in the effectiveness of generics Vs originals.

now, one thing to keep in mind is that once a drug goes generic, there is generally a newer (and often more effective) version of the original that comes out shortly.

Generics if possible, usually they are so much cheaper why not try them.

And 100% of the time I have not noticed any difference.

The only things I usually take are NSAID's so I go generic every time. Naproxen and Meloxicam ftw.
