Generational Trauma, Inherited Family Trauma, Ancestorial Trauma...

Do people really believe this stuff? Or is this just a crutch and excuse for them to continue to be a non-productive member of society and blame the man for keeping them down?

I'm developing trauma from your shitty threads.

Genetic memory. I’ve experienced it firsthand.

You need not more proof that ancestorial trauma is real than the New Iberia Haircut

Yes, and there's an entire industry that caters to the Hyphenated-American type of folks.

I guess you can say poverty is traumatic but that just takes you to wishy washy land and removes the focus from economics.
Specifically, what are the built-in, maintained levels of poverty/near poverty necessary for the economic system to function with as is profit margins.

I ate a half ounce of mushrooms one day and realized that I had carried my little known grandfathers identity and baggage for half my life. Was a wild revelation.

If that was true all of us coonasses would be fricked.

We are not bound by our past. We choose how we interpret and respond to past events.

You sound like you've been listening to too many women. I have literally never heard a man talk about generational trauma.

Most people don't know real trauma.

There are studies supporting this theory in animals, that it goes beyond simple natural selection.

There's been some studies on the effects of trauma (we're talking PTSD level trauma) on gene expression. From what has been studied, it doesn't alter the DNA itself but can potentially affect it's expression which can be passed down genetically. But the science is really limited at this point and there's been some studies that have shown children developing the opposite gene expression of their parents.

It wouldn't be unheard of when you consider some disorders have potential genetic correlation (substance use, schizoaffective, etc.). I think it's an interesting look at variables that could contribute to someone being more susceptible to certain responses to trauma.

Our review found an accumulating amount of evidence of an enduring effect of trauma exposure to be passed to offspring transgenerationally via the epigenetic inheritance mechanism of DNA methylation alterations and has the capacity to change the expression of genes and the metabolome.

I recall one study, and I can't cite it, just something I read a few years ago, where lab rats had two water bottles in their cage. One water bottle would shock them if they used it. So they learned real quick to only use the other water bottle. I think the bottles were color coded. The babies of those rats, a few generations later, still wouldn't touch the "shock" water bottle even though they had never been shocked. It was as if their instinct told them not to drink from the red water bottle. Something like that.

Of course, I’ve seen it with a number of people. “Generational curses” passed down from parents. Typically kids who were abused/traumatized by their parents will do the same to their kids

I haven’t seen it this way. Typically they are unaware that it’s a “problem”

All real but beatable. I grew up in a household full of abuse and abandonment but am a fairly high functioning adult. Wasn’t easy but can be done.
