I'm open to the idea. We're still pretty young in our understanding of genetics. It could be real. Could be bullshite.
Another thing to consider is brain development and how shitty environments early in life can have cyclical effects on your offspring as you make the same mistakes your parents made, which may be associated/confused with the idea of inherited trauma.

It's the age old question of is it nature vs. nurture or can it be a combination of both?
For example, we know there's a combination of genes that can make it more susceptible for you to be an alcoholic if passed down. One in particular, CRHR1, can see increased substance use risk in folks who have experienced trauma (it has to do with mediating the body's response to stress) depending on how it is expressed.
But that doesn't mean you will 100% become an alcoholic or will struggle with regulating when exposed to stress. A healthy environment and awareness can overcome that.
It's complicated but like you said, it's definitely worth a deeper look.

There's been some studies on the effects of trauma (we're talking PTSD level trauma) on gene expression.
Are you familiar with Rachel Yehuda’s studies showing reduced cortisol levels associated with PTSD transmitted from mothers to their children?
World Trade Center Attack
Holocaust Survivors
Her sample sizes are fairly small but her results showing a genetic basis for trauma transmission are intriguing.
