In 2005, I was a general manager at a pizza place (national chain) and no, I could not afford to comfortably live on my own. I probably could have if I had to, but it would not have been comfortably.

There is no question many young people struggle today. It took me 5 years after high school to get myself together and start earning better money. Such a tough spot to be in trying to make it on their own.

I agree that bitching doesn’t help, but are you seriously suggesting that America, the land of prosperity, freedom, and opportunity, has created a society that requires young people to hustle or climb in hot attics to have a future?

I don't disagree with her. Life is pretty shite right now from the financial aspect. That being said, dollars to donuts they vote to attempt to take any retirement income I have in the future as a high earner.

Shes right. Starting in the Bush years and ramping up in Obama years, we started both printing money like crazy and importing the third world for cheap labor...so that Boomers could enrich themselves and use govt to bail out their recklessness
It really started and gained full-steam in the 80s.
Overseas production.
Rampant chain store proliferation that stripmines capiital from local economies while "creating" mainly low paying jobs.
Extreme tax breaks for the wealthy. Crack down on unions etc etc etc. . .
Since then it's just been fine tuning the extraction of every penny possible from the middle class.

Work smarter. As a low-level Walmart employee, you will have a hard time making it on your own. So, find something that pays better or work your way into a more profitable position. It's not always easy. Never has been.
Yet somehow, people still make it. People come here from other countries and somehow make with fewer advantages than her.

Bae got it wrong. Don't be pointing the finger at folks 20 years ago. Point the finger at the folks from 40 years ago.

It’s incredible just how much the government is willing to destroy to prevent old people from having to do something besides sit on the couch and eat peanut butter pretzel logs while watching Forged In Fire reruns.

1 - Plan. Few do
2 - if you go to college, study for a degree in a profession. Medicine, Engineering are solid performers. “Social sciences” is just debt that does you no good.
3 - If you don’t go to college, learn a trade.
4 - Wait until marriage for kids.
You won’t have it made your first 5-10 years, but you can give yourself a foundation to build on that will provide for your next 40 or so till you retire.
It’s not complicated.

Boomers will downvote but as a Millennial I can relate. I'm 37 years old and have never owned my own home. I have money but have never felt financially comfortable enough to buy real estate.
I can't imagine what Gen Ze is going through.

Folks just need a firm hand shake and to show up on time. Doesn’t matter if we’re importing labor that can work for 1/5th of the cost under threat of deportation.

Yea I didnt know anyone living alone 20 years ago that was in their teens/early 20s. That has never been an affordable option this century.

What percentage of your income was housing, insurance and groceries when you were coming up though? Be honest.
Yeah, I took a year off from college in the 90s and shared a decent house with a friend in (more expensive than most of the US) San Diego and paid around $300 for rent + utilities. Trader Joes and fish tacos were super cheap.
I made around $10/hr in a record shop, took numerous road trips and even saved some money that year.

No, she’s not right. Wonder what she did in grade and high school? Did she goof off? Now can only work at Walmart? Stupid bitch. Doesn’t know jack shite other than spreading her legs.

The national average for monthly rent is about $1,500. In 1988, I rented a pretty nice half of a shotgun double one block from Audubon Park for $400.

In college or around that age, completely normal. If they’re late 20s, it’s abnormal

I understand she is frustrated. In my experience lower entry level employees in retail have never been able to afford the things she wants.
When I started my employment career 60 years ago I was taking care of chickens. I felt these same frustrations. These frustrations lead me to get a few college degrees so I could afford the life style I desired.

Not new.
There were many years with shitty roommates. Most people had to have them.
You didn't leave mom's house and just live on your own 20 years ago either.
Dormmates, roommates, crazy gfs...
It always took a good 4 yrs or so to actually put yourself into a position to live on your own...and then you couldn't afford much else.
