They never chase you. I catch them in a regular basis, and even when catching them most don’t attempt to strike.
That is bs, I can't tell you how many mocassins I've had to blow away with a 20 gauge while squirrel/deer hunting because they will come toward you. One was trailing behind my little brother one time and we didn't see it until it was a good 1-2 feet behind. Am I saying all cottonmouths will do that? Of course not, but there are some that will get aggressive.

If you have a rat snake, you need one!

I have trouble not killing the good ones. I had a good sharp shovel and a black snake came up out of the ground. It took me several deep breaths to reason that he or she was in the ground in a mouse or mole run and that was a good thing. I have not had a large compost pile since the year I went to ours in early spring, reached in and encountered snake eggs, some hatching. Guess Ma Snake chose it for the warmth.

Snakes are misunderstood creatures, most are docile other than those cottonmouth assholes that will charge you in the woods.

What’s the easiest way to identify the difference between venomous/non venomous snakes?
If I am close enough to see what kind of fangs/teeth the thing has, it is going to be a post-mortem inspection.

Most venomous have a diamond shaped head.

Glad you didn't kill, great snake to have around. I miss the nest of speckled kings I had in an old stump behind my yard and between a pasture behind it. We had ZERO rodents around for a couple years. Not sure when/why they moved on but I'd welcome them back again.

Agreed for most species but calling all snakes harmless is bullshite. A close family friend's 9 year old daughter was bit on the ankle by a rattlesnake just as she stepped out of the back door. She had to get like 14 vials of antivenom and was in the hospital for weeks. I also had a big rattler hit the back of my boot walking through a coastal field, those fricks hit hard. In general they don't bother me and get a pass but any venomous ones around the house die, unless it's a coral snake, I have relocated a few of those.

Literally one of the best, if not the best, animals you can have in your backyard.
A working cat is pretty good too.
