Do you really believe only gay people grow away from the Catholic Church? That is beyond absurd.
I was raised Catholic and my entire family is Catholic, but I never felt comfortable with some of the Church's teachings despite being straight.
I am now a practicing Methodist. As my father says, he'd rather me be a full-blown Methodist than a half-assed Catholic like I was.
I still respect the Catholic Church, and because of that respect I decided to not try to get the Church to conform to MY views. Instead, I found a church that more closely reflects them.
The Church, BTW, does not hate gays. In fact, I'd wager that it's more likely the other way around.

I find that VERY hard to believe, especially since his whole family is Catholic, and so is the vast majority of people who live/grow up in Amite, LA.

And this is a legit issue. The diocese call the priest out on this issue. The diocese did not disagree with the priest doctrinally but they did disagree with him stylistically.
But you can see how the two issues can be confused (based on the the simple fact that people are so poorly chatecized).

Wrong. The criteria Jesus specifically said was to repent.
Repenting (assuming it's sincere) gets you into a state of grace.
