I can't think of any time I've been to a funeral where a priest has said/heavily implied "Hey, if I personally might think you're a piece of shite, don't bother coming up here." Sorry I don't tend to hang out or associate myself with those types of people.

May be what the guy needs to get out of that church and quit believing in magic. I feel sorry for the weak minded people who need religion.

The fact that John Wayne Gacy who repents on his death bed for murdering countless people is somehow more worthy of heaven than Bill Gates, who has saved thousands of lives but just happens to be an atheist. Does anyone besides me realize how insane that sounds? Hardcore Christians really do put murderers on a higher pedestal than atheists and gays.

That priest is such a piece of fricking shite. I hope they yank his arse out of the church and make him work in an office somewhere. This is coming from a practicing Catholic who goes to mass every week.

It's a sad day when people can't understand why a person living openly and unrepentantly in a lifestyle that the Bible calls an abomination would be treated differently than someone who commits a sin, but confesses and asks forgiveness. It's like we have an entire generation who has no clue what Christianity is and what it isn't.
Christianity isn't a scorecard where your good deeds are weighed against your bad deeds. That's why it's unique among world religions. Anyone can gain salvation, regardless of what they've done, but if they refuse to repent (as this guy does) then they can't gain it. Period.

You're not understanding the core principle behind Christanity. This is that in God's eyes we have all sinned and come short of His glory. And the wages of sin is death. No works you or anyone does can cover those sins. no matter what good "works" we do they can't make up for our sin. The only way to be saved can from the fate of having to pay for your sins is to confess Chirst as your savior and repent from sin. Sin requires death as punishment, not just physical death but spiritual death as well. That's what hell actually is, spiritual death by eternal separation from God. That's why Christ died on the cross. His death paid the debt that we all should by rights have to pay. All we have to do is accept His gift by confessing that we are sinners, accepting Him as our savior, and repenting from sin.
And that's where people get confused. They don't know the actual definition of the word "repent". They mistakenly think it means to just ask forgiveness. But that's only half of its meaning. The other half of repenting is to turn 180 degrees from our sin. The true meaning of the word "repent" is to "turn from". In other words, it means to change from a sinful nature to one of following Christ. Thus it's not enough to just keep asking forgiveness while continuing to live exactly like you did before repenting for your sins. A sincere change has to take place where you genuinely turn from your sinful nature. But that does not mean a Christan will never sin. Nobody can go through life and never sin. I know it sounds complicated and counterintuitive. But that's what lays at the heart of the Christan faith.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not claiming to be a perfect Christian or better than anyone. The Lotd knows I'm about as far from perfect as you can get. I'm just trying to explain to OM and others who have a mistaken understanding of Christianity.

Clearly a setup and the priest did the right thing.
If a priest knows someone is living in sin and is unworthy of receiving the sacrament he has an obligation to respect the sacrament.

It's a Catholic church, and they do have their history of denying sacraments to people. I don't know if they still do, but you used to not be able to receive communion when you were divorced.
