Agree with your assessment of how Gatlinburg handled this situation. We knew the high winds were coming over the weekend and pictures from Gatlinburg posted at noon yesterday should have been enough to make them act. The GSMNP was on these fires then. The Twin Creek picnic area and Science Center is basically in downtown Gatlinburg. I would drive thru that area to get to the Science Center.

how do they have eagles in cages? and now they can't go in and set em free?
There are three in a smaller cage in Dollywood and several in a big net enclosure on the side of the mountain right next to it. Someone had said these eagles couldn't be released into the wild for whatever reason, so they were allowed to keep them in captivity to take care of them.
We spent five nights in the area last week. First time there and the whole area is beautiful and the people were the nicest I've ever come across in all of my travels.

Dollywood had their act together last night securing their facilities.

Haven't most if not all of these wildfires in the southern Appalachians been arson?

The park is investigating one fire they are suspicious of how it started.
The high winds knocked down trees which pulled down power lines. That added to the fires.

I read some guys filled tires with kerosene, lit them, and rolled them down a mountain. I think that was a few pages back

My friend trapped at Ober Gatlinburg (the bottom end where the ice skate rink is) is still there this morning. They, and others from cabins in the area who ended up there, were in their cars in the parking lot until around midnight, when a worker showed up and let them all into the building.
My parents were up there last month. They've gone up there for a week every year since their honeymoon in 1972, without fail. They said they had never seen it so dry, and the creeks so low as it was last month. My father said he knew then it was going to burn sooner or later because all it would have taken was a tossed cigarette.
EDIT: Just heard they were rescued. Don't know details other than they are safe.
