You can thank an La. native named, no lie, Karen for the new style gas cans

quote:

The lawsuit against the gas container industry Karen Kornegay of Louisiana, whose 19-year-old son Dylan died in 2010 after suffering severe burns over 80 percent of his body. A can he had used to ignite a bonfire allegedly exploded and sprayed him with flaming gasoline.

quote:

While Kornegay acknowledges her son should not have used a gas can to ignite a bonfire — as the container industry warns never to do — she told NBC News she believed the container's design was to blame for the severity of his injuries.

Kornegay's lawsuit and others claimed that the containers were unsafe and defective, susceptible to "flashback" explosions because their designs did not include any flame mitigation devices.

A flashback explosion can occur when vapor escaping the can contacts a flame or a spark. The vapor can ignite and "flash back" inside the can.

It was her lawsuit and activism that led to the "Portable Fuel Container Safety Act of 2020''

please OT Moderates, make a case against this…

Well, that is if you’ve picked up a gas can in recent years.

I like this version. The pour stops immediately when you release the green button. I never spill or overflow anything.

anyone who has the new shite nozzles. do yourself a huge favor. $10 and shipping (if you don’t have Prime). All of about 2 minute install per can.

Gas Can Nozzle Replacement (3 piece kit)

I did this a few years ago before hurricane season and it was worth every cent when I was refilling a generator every 8 hours.

Modern gas cans result in more spillage and are a legitimate fire danger.

I still have two of the old-school metal gas cans that my old man....er...um...."liberated" from the National Guard in the 1970's.

Which is a significant fire risk; not to mention that it undermines the entire purpose of nanny state gas filler by allowing the spilled gasoline to just fume into the atmosphere.

Like almost everything the government has done around automotive fuel efficiency and emissions - it's pushed by a pencil neck in Washington that clearly has no context into how they work.

Not enough to roll them back. We have to permanently make this the responsibility of congress to set and provide limits/guardrails on what they can do over time.

Clearly these standards are imposed by people who do not understand what is possible and realistic from an engineering, manufacturing, and consumer budgeting standpoint.

Good hopefully this will also roll into the damn non venting fuel tanks on boats that compress on themselves and starve the engine for fuel forcing you to run with the cap cracked open

Drill a hole in the can for the smallest rubber grommet you can find. Use a small enough piece of rubber for a plug. Tether the plug to the can’s handle.

actually a whole bunch of lawsuits.

Attorneys have filed at least 80 lawsuits during the past two decades on behalf of individuals injured in alleged gas can explosions. They have argued that portable plastic gas cans are “dangerous” and “unsafe” because they are “susceptible” to flashback explosions. Most of the lawsuits have named as defendants Blitz USA, until recently the largest manufacturer of plastic gas cans, and Wal-Mart, the largest seller.

I retrofitted all mine to these. I also bought one of those battery operating gas transfer pumps. That works good too!

I hated the scepter tank at first but realized it actually isn’t hard at all to use so I got over this. I really didn’t get how people couldn’t figure out how to use them.

Also hilariously I noticed Lowe’s had started selling gas cans a little cheaper with no nozzle. They knew what people were doing. Buying aftermarket nozzles separately and slapping them on there.

Why did they design these cans so that they require 30 ft/lbs to press the hand lever and open the valve?

And why does the palm lever require a safety trigger in the center?

And why does a one gallon gas can force you to use two hands to operate it? Are these desk jockeys not aware that funnels or extensions are often need to be used which require using your off-hand?
