re: GA police kill small donkey in his pasture in the middle of the night

My BiL raised a freemartin and kept her on the farm until she died of old age. He would put her on a heavy chain and tie her to trees around the property so she could graze and he had less grass to mow.
There is a state highway that runs through the farm. The state had some young juvies picking up trash along the road when one of them walked onto the farm to pee. The cow saw him and came running (she was friendly, but huge). He climbed up a tree to get away from her and she patiently waited beneath the tree for him to come down. He was an inner city boy who had no experience with farm animals.
When my BiL showed up, there were a couple of state police officers there and they were about to shoot his pet cow. My BiL picked up a plastic feed bucket, patted it twice and she ran to him, letting the young miscreant escape.
My BiL asked the officers why were they going to shoot his cow because their little miscreant trespassed on his land and none of them had enough sense to figure out how to distract the cow for a few minutes.
I don't think he received a satisfactory answer.

Had he not walked up, they would have shot that cow. Tax dollars need to be reallocated to raise the pay for cops so it attracts better and brighter. Not double digit IQ holders with mental issues and violent tendencies.

You are correct, they would have shot her simply because no one had enough sense to walk behind her -- at a distance farther than her chain would reach -- so she would direct her attention elsewhere.
Thankfully, the juvie-treeing cow died of old age. She was huge -- local animal control once drove out to tell him she was too fat and he needed to do something about it -- and she could hurt you without meaning to, but there was no reason to consider shooting her.
She got off her chain now and then, but would come to the kitchen door and just stand there looking in, where they bottle fed her when she was a newborn calf.

Yeah specific dog breeds are well known for listening to their owners the first time they try to control them. Officers should let the dog attack them and bite them while the owner is “getting them under control” instead of shooting them justifiably.
