Cops don't typically give tickets at night (in my experience). They stop people mainly looking for drunks, but also for people with warrants and shite

They said he didn't have proof of insurance. I'm pretty sure cops can run your info and tell if you have insurance or not. Maybe he had insurance but just didn't have a valid card in the vehicle.

I got pulled over once and couldn't find the latest insurance card for my work truck. The cop came back and told me he didn't need it so I assumed he checked it out on his computer somehow... or maybe it was just bc I'm white.
