quote:Or, like someone mentioned earlier, there's some confusion between the payer and the beneficiary, since spouses and disabled dependents (like kids who are mentally retarded and such) could collect benefits for years after the original payer died. 50 yo marries 25 yo. They are married 20 years, he dies, and she lives to 99, then the payer's age would show up as 124 or something like that.
It came out today that there 334 million citizens vs 394 million active SS numbers. Some of that is fraud from illegals but it's also possible that some of it is the 150 year olds still in the system and marked as alive.
Wouldn't foreign nationals here legally also have SSNs, since they are tied to your tax filings? They would not collect FICA, but they would still need the number to complete their taxes and wouldn't be counted on the US population totals.
Other question is, are the 150 year olds receiving benefits?

Apparently SSN uses this old shite and it defaulted to 1869 or some shite if no date of birth was entered.
Sound like this is part of why SS needs to be focused on now not last.
That system helped hide a lot of fraudulent use of SS#s which also pushed a lot of fraud in government credits and so on paid out.

Who the frick cares what the issue is. It needs to be fixed.

But the math doesn't really add up and shows this is some kind of spreadsheet error because if you do the average payouts for the number on the list it far exceeds the sum payout.
What is the correct math? I’m curious. It sounds like you’ve done your own calculations.

frick you and frick social security. It’s a giant Ponzi scheme and is a fraud entitlement program.

As an eager new grad I was excited to start my coding adventure. My first gig was rewriting a cobol application. I was pretty pissed that I was fresh out of school and had to learn that crap.

I haven't seen anyone confirm this but I haven't searched for that answer either.
The Cobol theory is a dumb one, though. As I pointed out that is impossible since there are people older than 150 meaning their DOB is not the default of 1875 as people claim.
That alone means that SS needs to be audited and corrected.
Even if it was a Cobol issue the fact that there are people in the system with no DOB entered is also concerning and reason to be audited and corrected.
Being upset about this getting fixed is a stupid hill to die on.

The system is on COBOL
This was something they were supposed to fix under Obama with the original USDS program. Which is now DOGE.

The Social Security Administration mails checks from a mainframe running COBOL, which might kind of be OK except that more than half of the workforce that maintains it is at or near retirement age. What happens then? The Department of Veterans Affairs has a serious backlog of disability claims. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service processes permanent resident applications and everything else on paper. If you lose your green card, it will take you 6–8 months to get a new one and in the meantime you will not be able to prove you have the right to be in the country or get a job. All of these are design and information processing problems and all of these are matters of life or death to millions of citizens and all of them are things you can fix if you choose to.

The same people against this audit probably supported expanding the IRS to audit more normal citizens

Its the people who vote for a living that are upset about this. They fear an end to their welfare and getting more taxes back than they pay in.

Right. The man who programmed a video game at 12 years old in 1983 and sold it has no idea what Cobol is and got fooled by it.

The only ones fricking with SS have been the scumbag politicians.
Why are you mad at someone for pointing out the fraud? Why not the ones who have been fleecing you?

You know this bullshite was debunked right? Of course you don't, just another retard that parrots whatever LWNJ stupidity he sees.

Any developer familiar with a procedural language like C could learn COBOL from scratch in 2 weeks fairly easily.
Also, the COBOL theory is BS

Yea. The same one who has made cars that drive themselves and just for fun he figured we would install a microchip in a quadriplegic guy's brain so he could function in society.
