Last time I went to one of these I cried when I saw what the parents were going through, which was a surprise because I’m pretty jaded. I don’t think it’s helpful to cry at a non-family member’s funeral. What do the alphas of the OT think about in those moments to detach from situation?

Drugs help. Alcohol too. Reading the Rant, not so much.

If you’re gonna be there, be supportive or don’t go.

It's a dead child, I don't think anyone will hold tears against you.

No one will be paying attention to what you're doing.

Why detach? Just go be yourself and help out if you can.
I doubt the family cares if you cry or not. That's not what's on their minds at this time.

How did the son pass away?

Obviously you would contain your emotions enough to not make a scene, but shedding tears over a friend’s loss isn’t shameful in any way. You’re grieving with them.

ETA: everyone’s asking for his age, but regardless, I think it’s horrific when a child precedes a parent in death

Child son or adult son?

"How" does not matter to me, unlike these other busybodies.

It’s good to cry sometimes. Gives you humility and perspective.
I’d cry if there and I dont even know these people

Son was early 30’s. Brain cancer. I am closer in age to the son but better friends with the father.

Absolutely terrible, thats probably a reason to cry IMO. I don't think its weak to cry, it just shows you value human life and have a high emotional IQ.
