It's not common for a mother to lie about her kid's health issues especially something that serious. What would be her motive? She probably gave him no reason to not believe her and as time went on it might have become a non-issue to him, but since he was never told any different, he still assumed the kid had something.
I wouldn't say he was stupid. Maybe a little naive, but more than likely she was crazy.

Never talked to the kid about it either, unless we're assuming this kid was in on it too has been pretending to have a brain tumor since he was 4.

No lie I have been in a VERY similar situation before. The chick I was dating kept telling me all about her dad how he was so wonderful. He was a great athlete etc. He actually was a pretty cool dude once I got to know him. Then I found out he's actually a chick and is getting surgery to make it official. Dude's in his 60's.

guy is a very hard worker and makes lots of $$$, he really is devoted to his career. although he was a good Dad too I think, and yes kid is 100% healthy, not sure whole reason they got divorced but she is moving far away and I assume got a lot of $, he is not a dumb guy, I think he did not know for awhile and then did not want to know...but not sure what else she lied about, but good point, likely a lot...guy is seriously struggling though, kids don't talk to him and he is feeling about as dumb as you might think..one thing, he NEVER asked for $$ for the cause they never had fundraisers etc, he told me wife always told him she did not want publicity..
