You are all looking at this wrong, don’t worry about pay in the beginning worry about getting experince and getting contacts. If you believe in yourself it is the path to make the most money. Otherwise you have the chance of getting stagnant.

Good post.

Context for 150+ candidates...
We are talking about interviews done over the past 30 months with a net of 2 hires during that span.

Sales managers are always looking for great hires year round. F2F with 10 candidates a month is not unreasonable. But when the company invests 100k in the first year... and when an employee starts out a commission job with no pipeline... it takes a while to find mutually beneficial matches.

They should expect 32-36k salary before commission, Which is on par with admin assistant(secretary) pay with basic skills and a general studies degree from 4 yr college.

Maybe he wasn't really interested in the job. It wasn't the pay that he required for a job. It's just the pay that he requires for THAT job. Either he doesn't get the job which is what he really wanted, or he gets an absurd salary that makes the job actually worth taking.

Maybe you're right now that I think about it. As a younger guy but with 5 yrs experience in BR, I recall declining a position using that very method at local credit union in 2006.

I had a decent analyst job at an insurance company making $57k.
This Credit Union was offering 42-46k for a Visual Studio programmer for some in-house apps they wanted to build(I immediately thought EFF that shite. Too much work and deadlines).
Knowing their range, I automatically asked for 72k to leave my current cushy job. Very short interview and I went Ivars to beat the happy hour crowd.

Reading this thread makes me happy I went to school for Electrical Engineering and not basket weaving. Otherwise, I might be only to afford Fair Park/Oak Cliff rentals

Having a cell phone and internet connection were not necessities like they are today. Cell phones were a luxury for the rich. Nowadays if you don't have a cell phone then it would be difficult or impossible to maintain a lot of jobs.

Most businesses either pay for service or outright give you a phone.

bullshite. If you were an outside salesperson in the 80's a cell phone was damned near a necessity.

Did you live or work in the 80's? If you did, you'd know.

For a fresh out of college kid we pay a slightly higher salary the first 3 months during training where they are able to work existing leads and if they are worth a shot, cultivate their own.

They're trained by a sales lead, sales manager and on occasion the VP of the region (though rarely).

Usually they're out on their own by the time the three months are up, some sooner. We use a marketing and sales tool to track the deals they are working. Sales rep is responsible for turning in the report to their supervisor who then makes sure the deals are closed before passing to the manager for final approval (for pay out)

Daily sales meetings (10-15 minutes in the morning) to track progress and answer questions and then they are turned loose to either work from office or meet with clients or pound the pavement if they choose to

Clearly.

The first day of onboarding here I was given a company phone and laptop.

I can upgrade my phone every two years and just upgraded my laptop. Can get essentially a gaming laptop every 4 years.

Wow! I have a mechanical engineering degree and didn't have close to those expectations. Most I know of with "business" or other random degrees with no real direction out of school end up in the low 30's. At least friends and family I knew. My wife had an MBA and started there. Quickly move up once you determine a career path and get a little experience.
