i think the big cats are sold off as a culling tool. that leopard was going to get killed regardless
lions, leopards, etc populations are often pretty regulated. the issue with those animals is encroachment into their land by farmers and then the interactions with those farmers. so the governments engage in active conservation to keep populations adapted to their new habitats and so they don't get too populated to frick with farmers (b/c farmers will straight up poison hundreds of big cats if they feel threatened)

m just going to go ahead and assume that you are trolling because you just simply cannot grasp the idea of hunting conservation.
This is the point being missed by the liberal nut-bags. Responsible hunters are the best friends of an animal population. The money raised and conservation efforts put much more into the population than the hunters take out.
If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at the poachers, who are wiping out the populations and not putting anything back, and not helping the local communities. They're the criminals here. I guarantee the Jimmy Jons guy cares and contributes more for the elephant population, (and the african communities, whose economy is totally based on hunting the elephants responsibly) than all the bleeding heart liberals on his case.

actually, if you want to get mad at someone, get mad at the governments for not allowing the domestication and farming of elephants and/or rhinos
you want to get rid of poachers and save the species all in one move? flood the markets with supply by allowing legal farming of the ivory tusks

yeah let's ignore Africa for a bit. the people who have restored populations of endangered animals in America are hunters working with governments in a scientifically regulated market. that is 100% indisputable
African governments and international organizations are doing this in Africa with certain critically endangered species. poaching and other killing outside of this framework are why the animals are endangered. hunting within the framework is a way to try to create a system to regrow the populations (like we have in America)

yeah there are 3 main groups of animals and each has their own issues
big cats face issues with human expansion. they aren't "poached" but are often killed by farmers (in large numbers, typically by poisoning) when their habitats interact. regulations here involve keeping the populations stable within their new habitats so that those new numbers can be maintained. the tags here are sold in lieu of traditional culling of the herds
rhinos are poached for their horns for Asian markets. this is likely solveable because the horns are actually a renewable resource. you cut off the horns and they will grow back. the horns can be farmed and created into a legit market that is fully sustainable
elephants are poached for their ivory. i do not think this is renewable because i don't think elephant tusks grow back. the market is also worldwide (but i believe heavily dominated by Asia, here as well)

Couldn't they have auctioned off permits for rhino rides or something instead of killing the big guy?
Holy shite
I hope you are trolling.

It's not an assumption at all. He has contributed a million dollars or more to the conservation efforts of African game animals.
I'm willing bet a big stack of money that your contribution to African big game is somewhere around zero.

Writing the check to kill the animal means he cares about the elephant plights in Africa? Neat logic.

If you think you care about the elephants in AFrica more than someone who pays money to hunt them, you should supply us with your donation records to Elephant conservation. Unless of course you have donated zero dollars.
Corey Knowlton did a podcast with Joe Rogan and with Radio Lab. He spend $350k to shoot a black rhino in Namibia. I realize his side of the story will never change your mind on the subject, but perhaps it will give you a better understand of where the big game hunting community is coming from.

So answer the question, where do you think this money goes? Once again, poachers are the problem. they dont contribute anything to the local economies or towards conserving the elephant population. Legal hunters do both.

If it means that much to you, then stop eating meat, go buy the next $350 k ticket or travel to DC or Africa and become an active protestor.
