I don't believe they were ours though...

Of course not. But we were theirs and they started invading countries all over the region anyway and then bombed Pearl Harbor.

So are they or are they not attempting to establish dominance in the South China Sea?

Of course they are, I've never implied that they aren't. That said, so is the U.S...

All I've said is that they will not start a war with America.

I heard it mentioned on tv a while back that the US always has a submarine in the Western Pacific with nuclear missiles ready to fire at North Korea if needed.

Discussion of this matter went quit after that one mention..

I think this would be our only option to save Seoul from being obliterated by North Korean artillery bombardment in the opening stages of a war. It would just take too long to try and silence all or even a good portion of their guns using conventional means.

It was very interesting - the people and culture are great. The communist government, not so much...

Only if you learn Mandarin along with it, I'd imagine.

When two major powers have the navies and air forces running around the same piece of real estate trying establish dominance in award tend to happen, especially when other players like the Phillipnies, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam are doing the same. Does China want a war with the US? Of course not, I'm sure they'd much prefer to just become the de facto dominant power over the next 10-15 years. But that doesn't mean one won't happen.

I think this is the biggest risk of war in the South China Sea. I don't think the Chinese would allow any confrontation there with the US to turn into a shooting engagement. However, I could see them having an incident with one of the other players in the area where they would not be so reluctant to resort to violence. The question then is how would the US respond?

You're the worst at presenting your arguments.

I also never said that it wouldn't happen. I merely laughed at your incredibly high percentage of probability. Would have it much, MUCH lower than your 60-70% range. More like low single digits, or lower...

If it were that low then we wouldn't be spending hundreds of billions on sending ships and planes to the region.

I never did a WestPac deployment but my sub was stationed off Pakistan for 75+ days in case we had a strike mission for Al Qaeda. This was in 1999-2000. Obviously pre-9/11 with Clinton ordering Tomahawk strikes on Afghanistan and parts of Africa.

I'm sure DoD has a number of subs in the area to deal with NK

I think we'd see a massive split in the North Korean military if the little guy tried to invade.

Pilots would fly to other countries and seek asylum, those special forces would have a large percentage immediately turn themselves over to South Korean officials and seek asylum.

Invading ground forces would lay down their weapons before trying to traverse the mine field in the DMZ. The south's ultimatum to lay down weapons, fight with the South, or die would be enough to turn 30-40% of their troops. The slave prisoner workers would revolt if they could get word of war.

The North would run out of munitions quickly after their first hail mary volley.

They wouldn't do shite without China and China has enough problems of their own to finance and arm North Korea.

Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world when they invaded Kuwait. Look what happened to them.

I'd predict the same for the totalitarian NK regime. The only question is how brainwashed are those troops?

The surrendered in large part due to our air power. Our air power won't be near as effective in the wooded mountains of Korea as it was in the flat open desert of Iraq. Sure, we'd kick their arse, but it won't be nearly as quick or bloodless as some think.

This makes sense other than the level of political indoctrination of the North Korean people, and especially their armed forces. These people are beyond fanatical.

Hopefully the Pentagon listens to the troops and delays the retirement of that magnificent airplane.
