Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world when they invaded Kuwait. Look what happened to them.
Totally different situation between Iraq and North Korea.

I'd predict the same for the totalitarian NK regime. The only question is how brainwashed are those troops?
Brainwashing is one of the biggest differences. The vast majority of the Iraqi forces in 91 were barely trained and just wanted to survive and go home. The Republican Guard put up a halfway decent fight but that's it.
The North Koreans though are a different animal. Yes, most of their equipment is old and woefully out of date. But that won't stop them from fighting like fanatics. For starters, the soldiers don't know their stuff is out of date. Their leaders tell them they're the best and have the best equipment. That's all they know. Then there's the fact that from the day they're born their taught nothing other than
1. Their leader is as close to God as a human can be. Anything he orders is followed without question.
2. South Korea and the US are the most evil entities on the planet and all NKs problems are their fault.
3. The US and SK want to kill, rape, and enslave all Morth Koreans.
That's just the tip of the iceberg on how much the NK people are brainwashed.

Apple autocorrect strikes again.
Instead of "rising", that should say "razing".

Why would you think that?

North Korea has built an army that has good shock value. Their problem comes if the defenders are not overwhelmed by the shock of their attack. They will have logistic problems if combat is prolonged. This is the same as June 1950 when the North Koreans last invaded. They now face a better prepared defender.

i have no doubt that any resuming of hostilities on the korean peninsula will result in insanely high casualties for both sides. but once the south and the united states get organized, the north will have no chance. the only problem for the south/US is the issue of china

I understand the US and SK have very detailed plans to counter any attack from NK.
The point of the thread was how such a conflict would play out based on the assessment of someone who is one of the world's foremost experts on the matter. And I've got to say I agree with how he sees things playing out if that ever really happened. Namely, the opening act would see a massive deluge of destruction via artillery, chemical weapons, and even nuclear weapons by the North followed by a 4-6 month war where the US and South eventually defeat NK. Such a war would kill hundreds of thousands, maybe millions and leave a good chuck of the Korean Peninsula in ruins.

The expert on the subject who wrote this book says it would take 4-6 months. This his view on the matter. I posted his credentials just a few moments ago. Are you saying you know more about this matter than him?
I'm sure you remember the expert's projections on the first Gulf War. Weren't you a tank driver there?

Oh, I remember. History is rife with expert predictions of wars that proved wrong. There are no guarantees on these things. The best we can do is an educated guess. Well, just so happens he more educated on it than any of us, myself included.

Gunner. Although it would have been at least more comfortable as a driver. The driver has the best seat in the house on an Abrams. It's like sitting in a recliner almost.

I did 3 tours of Vietnam on an aircraft carrier. We carried nuclear weapons.
There are many options to take care of the situation......
