Would you send your kid to one? I was sure they didn’t exist in the US but it turns out they do.

Basically, it’s just all kids playing in a forest all day every day and doing constructive tasks. Like in Sweden, they build log cabins.

This started in Sweden and Denmark.

quote:

It isn't all hype. A 2003 doctoral dissertation by Peter Hafner in Germany showed that graduates of German forest kindergartens had a "clear advantage" over graduates of regular kindergartens, outpacing their peers in cognitive and physical abilities, as well as in creativity and social development.

Yes. I was planning on a cabin when I retire, so maybe I can get them to build me one for cheap.

I'd never heard of those before, and just perused a few school websites.

At first glance, I really like what I'm seeing.

I'd definitely want to observe for a few days before I committed to sending my kid there. But it seems like a potentially excellent alternative to the traditional classroom.

At that age, you can certainly get away with that type of environment before students have to start delving into more substantive book-learning.

I got some land, maybe I need to open up a kindergarten class where you come learn how to pick up sticks, remove unwanted bushes, rake leaves, etc. I'll even cut the parents a deal and let them do that for $1,000 a semester if they want.

If I had kids you're damn skippy I would. My best memories of being a kid were just exploring the local woods, catching frogs, etc.

Probably why I enjoy hiking so much now as an adult.
