We have outsourced everything in our lives.
Medicine, semiconductors, customer service
We definitely need to bring back semiconductor production in this country in a big way

Are they also working on the rust issues?
I read about that on Tigerdroppings. My Toyota was made in Japan and shipped across the Pacific ocean, and driven through at least one snow storm in Chicago. There's not a spec of rust underneath it.
Those pictures of the brand new Ford pickups seriously bad considering they haven't been exposed yet.

Henry Ford was a hard line Nazi. He'd have definitely been a Democrat.

Outsourcing was a catastrophic mistake. Washington got rich, and ordinary Americans got poorer.

Seems like an investor would look at this as an opportunity to start a microchip factory in the US?
Time and money make this a bad play from a private perspective. By the time the facility got up and running, the shortage will be over. Honestly, you need some sort of government incentive to invest in the long-term so that we can have a reliable domestic semiconductor manufacturer or two and not have to rely on China.

I'm sure the military would buy a shite load of them.

Henry Ford would have built his OWN microchip plant here in the USA.
Semi-conductor business is about to explode in the US. All these companies now realize the danger of having all of their suppliers in one area of the globe.

Can Louisiana get any of this?

Where in the article does it says production has been suspended?

General Motors has also had issues with supply. Their new Silverado and Sierra pickups in production now lack the cylinder shutoff system because of the microchip shortage. Meaning their trucks likely get slightly worse gas mileage than what the EPA sticker says because they run on all 8 cylinders all the time.
So just sell me that one, because I'll likely disable the eco mode shite anyway. I can't stand when those new cars shut off at the red light.

They exist baw.
It's a raw materials issue.

PC enthusiasts have been dealing with this for a year now, so I can tell you the answer:
These facilities are staggeringly sophisticated. Not only are they tremendously expensive (generally to the tune of billions of dollars), but they take 2-3 years to build, and that's once the trigger to build has actually been pulled. For someone to decide now to start up domestic silicon fabrication, we're looking at a 3-4 year gap before they come online.
Now, that's nothing to say regarding whether that's a good idea long term from a national strategic perspective, but from a private investor's perspective, it's not a great prospect.

If shops haven’t already been gearing up for this type of work (high tech, advanced, aerospace manufacturing) it is most likely too late. But there are Louisiana companies that will benefit. It’s a bit more intense than the O&G manufacturing.

Supply chain shortages. It's affecting about every industry.

My son is buying his first truck and is having a hard time finding the specific truck he wants .. there aren't any to be had currently BUT there is a shite ton he's told waiting "somewhere" for these chips.
I mean what the hell else is covid going to mess with?

The raw materials are the biggest issue. Not so much the manufactoring
