Ford will suspend F-series production due to microchip shortage

They will be short at least 45,000 units this year because of it. And they are stashing incomplete trucks at their Dearborn test track in Michigan.
General Motors has also had issues with supply. Their new Silverado and Sierra pickups in production now lack the cylinder shutoff system because of the microchip shortage. Meaning their trucks likely get slightly worse gas mileage than what the EPA sticker says because they run on all 8 cylinders all the time.
So Ford is seeing real production problems that results in a lack of inventory for them. Their competitors that were able to keep their lines moving (often by using parts destined for other products) are also seeing inventory problem as demand spikes for new vehicles.

It seems that partially completed 2021 Ford F-150 pickup trucks are popping up in all sorts of random parking areas these days except for Ford dealers. With so many vehicles left unfinished due to an ongoing semiconductor shortage, The Blue Oval has resorted to storing them near assembly sites until the microchips required to complete the vehicles arrive. After recent sightings near Ford production facilities and Detroit-area parking lots, Ford Authority has now exclusively spotted them at the Dearborn Development Center test track.
Despite adjustments to FoMoCo’s supply chain strategy, such as cutting out the middlemen when purchasing microchips, the shortage continues to wreak havoc on the automaker’s production volume to the tune of 45,000 units just last week. Of those, 11,700 units are Ford F-Series pickups, including the F-150.

The lack of inventory is readily apparent at Ford dealers, many of whom are accustomed to having several dozen F-150s in stock at any given time. In some cases, stock levels have plummeted to a fraction of that.

Damn you, CDC!

Are they also working on the rust issues?

Did Pfizer and Moderna buy up all the microchips?

More like damn those foreign silicone and chip manufacturers that shut everything down.
CDC and us, as importers, have no bearing on that.

Chip shortage isn't because of the CDC

I was poking fun at most of the OT with that comment.

Also, the chip shortage can be contributed to the crypto boom.
I fricking hate those crypto nerds so god damn bad.

Used truck prices are already insane too.

Wont the trucks work better without complicated electronics to fail?

I bought my GMC a year too early

Henry Ford would have built his OWN microchip plant here in the USA.

Seems like an investor would look at this as an opportunity to start a microchip factory in the US?

Wasn't there a man that was trying to fix all of these issues?

Some questions.
- Automakers have taken control of steel and aluminum companies to keep control of their supply of critical parts. Japanese automakers have done this with microchips and other electronic parts years ago. Will the domestic companies do this moving forward?
- Their American competitors are using microchips that were procured for use in other lower volume products to keep their highly profitable pickup truck and SUV assembly lines humming along. Why is this not happening at Ford?

Nobody here ever gets my sarcasm. Either I need to work on my sarcasm typing or people here need to stop taking me so seriously.

In Ford's case, the missing parts appear to be critical in the actual functionality of the vehicle.

Henry Ford was a true great American and definitely would've been a Trump supporter. He's also a great great uncle of mine
