He can't fill these jobs because they didn't invest in developing their work force.
That is the problem with a lot of companies they do not have a structure to build upon. Now some you have people with DEI degrees and a workforce that likes to push paperwork instead of progress.

I would probably love to trade my computer job for wrenching all day in a few more months

That’s because of the type of people who are mechanics.
You’d need to pay me 250k to be around “ball-busting” all day.

A lot tougher brand of human than cubicle jockeys.

So an entry level mechanic should be able to afford 2 new vehicles? When has that ever been the case?
Depends where you work. My buddy had a construction company and on govt projects he was having to pay 200k for diesel field mechanics. They flew in from out of town and worked two on, two off.
Dealership employees or auto shop workers arent making that kind of money.

What part of entry level didn’t you understand? No one is being flown in as an entry level employee anywhere.
Has anyone actually shown the starting pay for the avg ford dealership mechanic? I’m assuming it’s more like $20/ hour plus benefits and OT. He is saying $120k which is the pay with overtime and benefits included for a senior level tech.

Jesus dipshit. The trades have an entirely different system than the cubicle workers.
Those diesel mechanics were "entry level."

Techs don't get paid an hourly rate. Most get paid flat rate (a percentage of the book time for a job) and some get a hybrid of hourly and flat rate. One of the ways techs earn more is getting more efficient (faster) so they might flag 12 or more hours in 8 hours. A really efficient tech can flag 70 or more hours in a week. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, manufacturers are really tight on warranty work which is one reason dealerships lose techs to indy shops.

Ive got a tech that comes in to work all the time saying it averages 5 hours but he still gets paid for 8. It might be a dealer to dealer sort of thing
That is likely customer pay jobs or warranty work that hasn't been adjusted downward... yet.

At 120k/y a mechanic would be strapped trying to buy a Ford truck for himself and an SUV for his wife.
Used?

Trade schools FTW. Working with your hands on something a machine can't do will never go out of style.

There is absolutely ZERO chance Ford is hiring in new mechanics at $120K and unable to fill the jobs. Their CEO is no doubt citing what someone can make 10-15-20 yrs down the road with experience, certifications, specialized training, etc.
And is that anything to sneeze at? No, not at all. Ford should invest heavily in training high schoolers and building a recruiting pipeline.

Point to this anytime someone says we need to pay more for goods to bring manufacturing back to give jobs to the people who are refusing to take these jobs.
Point to this post as an example of an out of touch retard that has no idea why Ford can't hire mechanics at $120k/year. Hint: has nothing to do with lack of mechanics and everything to do with how dealerships treat their mechanics.

Of course not, if he buys them close together and "needs" a new one every 3-5 years.
Instead, buy your truck. Five years later, buy your wife "her SUV." Goal is to have only 1 auto loan open at a time.
That's how I roll on an income less than $120k, so it can be done

When I see complaints like this by large, mature companies....I wonder why they haven't developed their own talent over the last 10 years. If they did, why have they not been retained?
Posted on 11/16/25 at 8:10 pm to Jizzy08
I suspect that Ford spent a lot of cash on building their employee's skillset to handle maintenance and repairs of that Lightning EV model like that is rumored to be canceled due to poor sales.

Guarantee they have some stupid AI screener and unnecessary prerequisites in place.

Wonder how many people are going to be sitting around the dinner table at Thanksgiving and cite these 120k/yr jobs as fact and how every highschooler in the family should go to learn to be a mechanic to take one of those sweeeet gigs that don't really exist?
I wish someone with some clout in the media would call out the Ford ceo for spouting bullshite. Mike Rowe? (lol)
