Back in the late 70’s and middle 80’s small trucks were offered due to price.
A young person starting out could get in a Mazda truck for just $5795.
Co-workers husband was a salesman at a Datsun just turned into Nissan Dealer. Back then 280ZX and 300ZX were popular. Nissan/ Datsun truck was not as popular in the small truck category. He sold me a new Nissan Hardbody Z24 4 cylinder 4x4, ac, 5 speed, AM/FM radio, and rear bumper for $129 down and $129 a month. Other guys at work were jealous. I trail rode a lot in a club, his dealer sponsored our club, and the Nissan Hardbody was very popular due to the price vs quality back then.
Full-size trucks were out of my price range at the time.
I remember guys that I worked with waiting in line on Monday when the dealer opened to buy an Isuzu or Toyota truck $99 down $99 a month. Just a basic 4x2 truck AC, 4 speed or 5 speed, 4 cyl, no bumper. Bumper was $120 back then.
Gas prices and cost of living after Carter was in office pushed people toward these trucks.

Anyone who wanted to see an in depth review, Demuro gives his high functioning review. Spells it out pretty good, for those who keep saying you just want a cheap basic truck that is capable, here it is.

yuck. no, nope, not a fan at all.
i prefer the ranger for smaller or the F150, regardless.
*an older ranger. i don’t know what they look like now tbh.

Baffling how Toyota is the only company that can seemingly design a midsize truck that isn't vomit inducing in appearance.

Not only that, the Ranger and Tacoma don't look that different.

Gas could be 8 dollars a gallon and I would not drive this abomination.

Why did it take someone this long to say this?
We did this shite in the 70's. Quit pretending that you've come up with something new for Millennial moms.

I’d love to have either of my old Rangers back.

bump, anyone bought or ordered one yet? Seems like a decent option for someone just starting out.

Yep. The market gets a lot smaller when they actually start asking for money.
Auto enthusiasts have to be the worst consumer segment when it comes to actually buying what they say they want.
Manuals, wagons, compact trucks, super sedans etc etc. People beg for them for years and then they sell like dogshit when a manufacturer actually brings one to market.
I think the maverick will do well, but it would certainly buck the trend.

I’ve been looking at the Hyundai Santa Cruzes. They seem fun. What’s the word on them?
I got one a couple months ago. Love it so far. Only gripe is wireless CarPlay is glitchy. It’s comfortable, great standard features, quick with the 2.5 turbo, tonneau cover and bed storage is great.
Readylift should have a 2” lift available soon. Planning to add that and some AT tires for a more aggressive look. Someone on the forums is prototyping the lift and it looks so much better vs stock.

Ford sucks for naming a limp-wristed golf cart after an American Patriot.

They will have a hard time busting up the Subaru monopoly in this segment of buyers.
