True

and I guess if you are the type to pay for a handyman for everything it can add up

I've probably saved myself thousands of dollars by watching a few YT videos

We'd be surprised at how many homeowners don't know anything about hvac air filters and dryer lint filters.

Also this.

$5k per year is fricking nuts.

We’ve lived in our home going on 5 years and the total that we have likely spent on repairs has been, maybe, $8k, and that was with building a new back deck.

If you're calling repairmen, you're paying way too much. As a homeowner you have to learn to do a few handy things yourself.

Same.

The only years I’ve paid more than 5k, I had major hurricane damage and the insurance company paid me to repair the house.

Runner up was replacing HVAC and that was less than 5k.

I don't count my wife getting bored of how a room looks at "maintenance and repairs"

what appliances are y'all buying? I've been in my house 12 years and yet to replace a single appliance

what are you people doing to your homes?

I guess I was being generous. I do have a buddy that has an appliance fail damn near every year. And his house was built in 2018 or so. It's a nice house also. He's just had a bizarre storm of lemon appliances. AC, microwave, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator have all gone out. Some of them multiple times. But even that hasn't cost him $5k a year. That's not normal. I'd also usually blame them for doing something they shouldn't but the things that have happened don't seem like you could use them out of the ordinary.

My previous house, I had the AC and garage door opener go out the first year. And one of the burner elements on my stovetop went out. That was the maintenance items over the course of about 6 years there.

In all reality, you either do preventative maintenance on your house, or you deal with repairs. $5k a year on maintenance is absurd.

That seems more applicable than lawn care.

Upgrades are not "you should expect to drop another $5K/yr average on upkeep & maintenance."

frick off with this nonsense. And if you spend $5k on lawncare, well I have no words for you.

i lived on a hill with over 1000 trees on my property.

i easily spent 5k/mo a few times just removing trees that were starting to lean or came loose due to the middle TN cycle of RAIN RAIN RAIN followed by WIND.

Depends on what you consider maintenance and upkeep. Hell, I spend that much in landscaping services.

If he has a large estate, nah. But if he's an average homeowner, he's definitely out of line.

Maybe he's counting maid service, pool service, lawn service, etc.

Most people don’t live on a hill with 1000 trees.

You’re an outlier.

I’ve owned for 20+ years, and I’m convinced it’s a scam.

Same thing applies to having a wife.

You wouldn't know the truth about owning a home if it were biting you on the arse.

One of my kid's in-laws bought a house in Annandale, VA in 1990 for $250k. It's worth nearly a million today.

Buy a house in Bogalusa in 1990 and you might get what you paid for it today.

You do dumb tricks, you win dumb prizes.

I’m well over that since I bought my lovely money pit

The poor treat luxury consumables as assets.

The middle class mistake liabilities for assets and active income for wealth.

The rich are rich because they have actual assets.
