Sales taxes drive purchases to other states, especially in areas close to state borders. Sales tax costs economic activity to leave an area, especially for bigger ticket items.

This is stuoid. I have yet to meet a client that told me they didn’t want to work because it would move them to a higher tax bracket. This is especially true with state income taxes.

quote:

If you consume, you pay tax. If you do not consume you do not pay tax.

Everyone consumes… some buy stuff on other places

If it wasn’t for sales taxes, half of the population wouldn’t pay any taxes at all. This includes all of the people who live off of the bloated US welfare system.

If you pay for housing, you pay property taxes. Renters are paying the property taxes owed by their landlords.

Good Idea...

I’m jealous

It's Alaska. **shudder**

They tax people in Alaska in unique ways since the State government has grown so much and oil prices have tanked

Basically, they take more than half of each person's (woman, men, and child) Personal Fund Dividend (PFD) each year. Causes a huge fuss every year.

It goes without saying that they have similar issues with big govt taking people's money

That's a pretty socialist world view. I own it, why do I have to pay you to keep it? Consumption taxes are absolutely the fairest taxes. Estate, income, and property taxes have no place in the U.S.

I love it

Everyone participates, and I get to decide how much I'm taxed by how much I choose to buy, and at what price I am willing to pay

Property taxes and income taxes suck. And punish the hard working

Funny because the vast majority of the framers preferred property tax to all other forms. They must have been a bunch of socialists.

Most easily weaponized AND most easily dodged. Let me ask you, if your state said they were abolishing income taxes and property taxes and going to a straight 25% consumption tax on all goods and services, would you pay that 25% like a good citizen or would you make attempts to make all your largest buys in neighboring states with much lower sales taxes?

I guess you could move to ultra conservative Europe. They are ALL about consumption taxes over there.

That's because we have to make up for all those corporate incentives. Citizens don't donate to campaign funds nearly enough to rate a tax break.

Everyone owns businesses?

Maybe you missed my line where I said property and income taxes hit those that work hard. People that own personal property and business property are taxed for both, whereas renters/leasers dont actually pay the tax, its more of a consumption tax for not owning their own property. In fact, if the property tax goes unpaid, they could actually continue to reside with little effect on their credit or financial obligation. That all gets transferred to the next property owner

Really dumb take. Sit through a municipal budget meeting to see where it gets its revenue and where it goes. Unless you have an equitable plan on how to replace property tax revenue the loss in services would be catastrophic.

What landlord doesn’t factor in property taxes when deciding on rent? I certainly do. I pass every cost increase on to tenants.
