For people who don’t live in Monroe

In comparison to other cities, is it really as bad as it’s made to be? I wouldn’t know, because I’ve lived here all of my life and don’t know how to contrast it. Schools are pretty shitty, except in West Monroe (who has a pretty solid school system) and other parish schools like Sterlingon. Crime is pretty bad. There are many parts of the city that aren’t good to venture into.

I've lived in Louisiana 39 of 41 years and I've never been to Monroe

in short, yes it's that bad. i lived in NELA for 28 years, including Monroe. moved to VA, DC and TN and it was life-changing.

Lincoln Parish gets a lot of funding benefits from having two four-year universities. Karl Malone doesn’t hurt, either.

Monroe is great.
It’s pretty much Plaquemine on steroids with a community college and pharmacy school.

My mom ended up in Louisiana due to her dad's job transfer. His initial transfer was to Monroe. My mom has fond memories of living and going to HS there in the 60s-70s.
Oddly enough my wife ended up in Louisiana due to a job transfer as well, also to Monroe. She thought it was awful and was happy when she was transferred again to BR.

Born and raised in Monroe ( Booker T area) ... finished high school in '00... 4 years in the Army... moved to BR( to attend Southern) ... stayed in New Orleans a couple years moved backed to BR... been all over the country... with all that said NO PLACE compares to Ouachita Parish... Monroe's the greatest city on Earth... my honest opinion

Monroe was nice in the 70s and early 80s. It's a dump now.

I live in Austin, and yes...Monroe is a pothole. Same can be said for pretty much any city in Louisiana tho.

Which ones? Neville, St. Fred’s, and River Oaks are all pretty solid (that’s public and private).

I had the honor of my dad being transferred there going into 8th grade. I was besides myself and planned to hate it until I could get through High school and back to LSU. I wound up liking it when I met some like minded families and kids. Should jab left for college but as easier to stay because I was paying for it and had a good job. Had as much fun on the river and bayou as you can have. Had fun drinking, slaying poon and smoking weed. Graduated NLU and left never to return.
That said, if I could make great money and move back I would consider. A 500k house there is 1.2 in BR. Get a boat and cruise the river/bayou in a quiet non stressful atmosphere. Could be a lot worse.

The only thing keeping Monroe from going full Alexandria is the I-20. The best thing about the city is an effective method of escape. Think about that.

Yall know how much I dislike BR.
I lived in Monroe for my first semester of college (back when it was NLU). I had a countdown to when the semester would be over on my calendar and I could move back to BR. This was after my first week living there. It was a crappy and depressing city 23 years ago...can't imagine it got much better since then.
If you put a gun to my head and told me I had to either move to Monroe or BR...I'm picking BR
