Hockey pucks: They're small and heavy and — one Michigan college thinks — may be the perfect weapon against an active shooter on campus.

Oakland University, a public school in Rochester Hills, near Detroit, is distributing thousands of 94-cent hockey pucks for just that reason.

The distribution, which began earlier this month, stemmed from a March faculty active-shooter training session, which followed February's shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school that left 17 dead.

quote:

A participant at the training asked Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon what items people could use to defend themselves on the campus, which has a no-weapons policy, the Detroit Free Press reports.

A hockey puck was a "spur-of-the-moment idea that seemed to have some merit to it, and it kind of caught on," Gordon said.

A well-placed shot would do some damage. 30 well-placed shots would probably subdue the attacker.

Ironically the guy in that gif survived the Columbine school shooting.

WTF? If someone comes in shooting, how accurate of a throw will you have trying to get away?

After one of the school shootings some school came out and said they put a bucket of rocks in all classrooms to prevent school shooters.

Sounds dumb at first. But let's say the shooter enters a classroom and a class of 100+ (since this is college) and all of them just launch hockey pucks at him.

That would do some serious damage. They are heavier than a baseball.

Why not just inform the shooter he's in a gun free zone?

Giving them all a gun might be a better defense against a shooter.

Or why not ninja throwing stars? Spears? Blow guns with poison tipped darts?

If we're going with the sporting goods department they should issue everyone a paintball gun.
