Son 20 year old, and I had a last meal at an outdoor restaurant on the bank of the nile in Cairo Egypt before going to the airport. He had roast pigeon. trip between Cairo and London is about 5 hours and he spent 4 in the crapper. Between London and Houston was 7 hours and he spent 6 in the crapper.

moral of the story.....do not eat Cairo pigeon before a long trip

Got sick in Phoenix a couple years ago during training. I was feeling nauseous and pale and got the cold sweats. The instructor took a look at me and said, “ You look like shite. Go back to the hotel before you get us all sick.”

I felt terrible waiting on the hotel van and once I got into the front seat, I couldn’t even talk, I just wanted to get to my room a couple miles away. About a mile from the hotel, I started getting tunnel vision and the last thing I remember thinking was, “This is not good.” I passed out and woke up about 30 seconds later and we were in a parking lot and I had puke all over the front of my shirt and in my lap. I opened the door and vomited again in the parking lot. The driver said my head just fell forward and I puked all over myself. We made it back to the hotel shortly afterwards and he dropped me off at the side doors and I apologized for puking in the van (most of the puke was on me, just a little on the seat and the floor) and told him, “Sorry, I’d clean it up, but I feel like I’m dying.”

I walked the short distance to my room that was thankfully on the 1st floor and proceeded to shite and puke my guts up for a couple of hours. Not sure if it was food poisoning or a bad stomach virus, but it was rough.

For those in the medical field, what would cause me to pass out like that?

Potentially norovirus (the infamous "stomach flu" which sometimes takes over cruise ships) or a severe bacterial infection like Salmonella or enterotoxic E. coli varieties can result in low-grade fevers, the "cold sweats" and syncope

Ate Chinese in Pitt last year

Chinese is what got me the worst too. Worked an early shift and hit the buffet at 11 am when they opened. Apparently if there was food left in the tray when they closed, they just kept it around and reused it the next day. I guess whatever I got didn't get refrigerated overnight and I got blasted.

Got burned twice by Burger King in the 90's. Cross contamination between raw burgers and lettuce is what we figured out after talking with the manager. Got offered a free whopper. No thanks.

How do you guys determine if you have food poisoning or a stomach flu?

I'm sure a test for bacteria would determine it.

I was always under the impression the "stomach flu" was basically a 24 hour process (give or take). This past summer I started with a headache and some mild gastro issues...then the next three days I could barely sleep, shite my underwear multiple times (waking me up from the few minutes of rest I could get) and puking 7x+ a day until there was literally nothing left in my stomach to throw up but bile. All I ate over the course of 6 days was 1/2 slice of bread and a few chunks of antelope. I lost about 10 lbs. After the shitting/puking stopped, I had 3 days of stomach bloating that was so bad it hurt to walk...followed by 3-4 days of the worst constipation I'd ever had in my entire life. It was at that time I figured out how it could be possible to die on the toilet like Elvis.

I initially assumed it was the stomach flu, but it feels like it had to be something worse than that. The squirts started pretty soon after a luncheon event meal (steak). Looking back the steak may have bit undercooked.

Lots of folks give it to themselves.

Washing your hands, fruits and veggies is a step too far for some folks.

A real case of food poisoning is like was said above. Projectile vomiting and violent diarrhea at the same time and severe pain in in your stomach.

Yup, I had it about 6 months ago from an undercooked chicken thigh and it was horrible. I would have to rush the diarrhea so I could try and flush to turn around and puke.

It's a miserable 24 hours to say the least, and I am militant about cooking certain things now. Because holy hell.

I guess the only good thing is that it clears up pretty quickly once you start to recover.

I nearly died from salmonella contracted at Cracker Barrel I-45 north in Houston, December 7, 2001 ~ 7 pm. Intractable diarrhea for 8 hours with fever, pain and some vomiting started up about 1 am. Barely conscious during the LSU-Tennessee SEC championship game. Extremely ill periodically til after Christmas, with diarrhea and foul gas; it went chronic with the same symptoms off and on till late September 2002, at which time natural immunity finally restored normalcy.

did chewing on ice help?

No, the Phenergan stopped the nausea and knocked me out till it wore off every few hours. Frozen TV dinner was the culprit.

Got it from some fresh salsa that was served with street tacos in Mexico City. It was the second closest I’ve ever come to thinking I would die. Luckily was at a good hotel that brought me off menu room service stuff to help and also checked on me multiple other times to be sure I was alive.
