we pay auto insurance premium's every single month

Part of that is required by state law. And part of that is required by lending institutes if you finance.

But another factor when it comes to insurance is that it involves elements that you can't control (other drivers and acts of God).

I think with extended warranties people feel like they have more control over the mechanical condition of their car since they are generally the only ones operating it. They know how many miles they put on the odometer every month and where and how they drive the car. They know how they shift the gears and how they accelerate and decelerate. They know how often the oil and fluids are changed and how often routine maintenance is performed. It's not a foolproof guarantee but it goes a long way towards risk management.

But like another poster mentioned, the post-Covid inflationary and supply chain environment has shifted the equation. Dropping off your car for a $600 repair and picking it up the next day is a thing of the past and the new normal is a nightmare. Warranties need to be more closely considered.

After reading the replies, I think it can be summarized as...

If you drive a GM or Ford, the extended warranty is a wise investment

If you drive a Toyota, you're just pissing away money on an extended warranty

Or you could be not disappointed that you didn't have to repair the vehicle (use the warranty), and still have $4000 (or whatever it cost) in your pocket

Mine was $1700 for 7 yr or 100,000 miles. I just had my water pump replaced at 97,600 miles. It cost me $355, if I wouldn't have the warranty it would have been $1800 out of pocket.
I also had a torque converter changed out at 65,000 miles (5,000 past my factory powertrain warranty). That was $2800, cost me $180.

I typically don't get the warranty but I'm glad I got it this time.

Also, if you buy a new car the price of the warranty is negotiable. If they tell you its 2000, tell them you'll pay 1000...... A lot of times they will come down.

For starters you did not say how you paid for the warranty.

For the truck I just bought my 4 year 100k warranty was included in the price I paid

The truck I traded in with 96K miles had a 5 year 100k warranty

I’m actually starting to agree with this. Extended warranties have become another aspect of inflation. Customer service is dead, regular warranties are drying up - the extended warranty is essentially a price increase.

have Autoexcel for my Genesis and just had the dealership take care of a bad fuel pump and sending unit as well as valve cover leaks. $1400 in shop labor and parts cost me $100.00. No hassle and everything handled between the dealership and the warranty company.

Starter went out 2 years ago and again, $100.00 for $1000 dealership shop labor and parts.

I paid $3000 for a 5 yr 60,000 bumper to bumper. Car had 98,000 when I bought it.

In your example, you are still under water. You have spent $3200 for $2400 of repairs. You only have 3 years remaining (unknown miles) and are hoping to have another $900 of repairs to break even on the warranty.

You priced a powertrain repair recently?
I used to be in your boat but with the rising costs of EVERYTHING I've changed my mind.

We have owned 6 cars since 2000 and never bought an extended warranty. Let us average out and say $2000 per warranty per car not bought (that is low for a decent warranty), I have saved $12,000. Out of those 6 cars the following repairs were made outside of factory warranty

Catalytic converter failure - was major damage the way it melted - ~$2000
Radiator replaced/misc - ~$1000
Oil Cooler - ~$800
Leaking rear axle - ~$500
Timing chain - ~$1000
Infotainment (replaced with upgraded, instead of repair) - ~$800

I am way ahead on savings by not buying a warranty.

The good news is your brother can shop around for an extended warranty. The amount of money he can save by buying the warranty from a different dealership will be yuge. Some dealerships reduce warranty costs because of the number of warranties they sell. He can save thousands.

Tell us more about shopping for extended warranty

We hear about having to buy from the factory, and that you should not buy from independence

But you’re saying that you can buy the same factory warranty from a different dealership and that you don’t have to buy it when you purchase the car.

Is that correct?

Thanks to ChatGPT I did some fun math. If I invested the $2000 per car warranty not bought, roughly at the time of purchase I would have $48,000 off $12,000 not spent on warranties.

Downvote away, but extended warranties are basically hoping for failure to justify your decision. Instead take that money and invest it, over time it is a much wiser decision. Warranties are sold to make them money, not save you money.

I drive quite a bit, I just traded in a 2022 with 96k miles bc my 100k mile warranty was about to run out.....i've had a few issues that thank goodness I didnt have to come out of pocket, but I wasnt about to chance going over 100k and something happens and I would have to come out of pocket....frick that

The worst part is the waiting for parts bc everything is on back order, so they keep your truck/car so you dont lose your place in line, wont give you loaner, so you end up having to rent a car.....which the warranty will pay for

And you can't even see how its a scam huh? You are trading in a 3 year old vehicle to buy a new one all because your warrenty is running out.

This is 100% true. Warranties are through a manufacture, 3rd party or dealer. Manufactures that offer warranties can be purchased at any dealer or even sometimes semi-from manufacture. If you go to say Mopar or BMW websites, they list their extended warranties and links to find dealers. They do not care what dealer you use.

Extended warranties usually run concurrent with existing new car warranties. Read the fine print, however a 5 year/60000 warranty is only 2 years and 24,000 added past the new car 3year/36000 warranty. The warranties are start at initial purchase. If buying used the mileage stops, but time keeps on going. If you purchase a 2022 car with 5000 miles, that 5 year extended is only 2 more years. That is specific to manufactured extended warranties and Certified pre-owned come with better option. CPO cars will run several extra $1000s over non-cpo, so you are paying for that warranty anyways.

3rd party or dealer warranties can begin from purchase date of a used car, however they are suspect in many ways on what you get for service.
