get a dental mouthpiece. The machine will eventually drive you crazy.
I actually agree with this. Had a CPAP for a few months and it drove me crazy. I was unable to get used to it.
Talked with my doctor and she recommended a prescription oral device. Not the crap you can buy on the Internet.
This thing is amazing. I had to go to a dentist who is certified in sleep medicine and go through a bunch of test, then he made a mold of my teeth. 2 weeks later I received the device and have been sleeping great ever since.
I have done 2 sleep studies since receiving the device and my numbers are better than they were from when I had the CPAP.

Probably saved my life. I was falling asleep at work, at home, meetings, you name it. I was waking up 8-10 times a night. Sleep study was rough because who can sleep with a leaf blower on your face at night? I can now sleep 6 hours with not even a nap during the day. I can't say I'm use to the full face mask even after 2 years, but I know I must use it.
I'm a side sleeper, btw.

I don't know anyone who uses one that isn't over weight.

Use the machine until you sleep through one full night. The first night you do that will be a game changer.

Life changer indeed. Sleep study: I stopped breathing 181 times in 180 minutes.
Wife would go to sleep at 8 p.m so she could get some sleep until I got to bed around 12 or 1 because once I went to sleep, snoring and tossing, jerking, etc. wouldn't allow her to sleep.
First two nights I wore it she'd shake me to make sure I had not died. That's how bad I'd been for several years.
I use the mask that covers both nose and mouth. I used to keep a sore throat. Have not had one in 10 years.
If I lay down for a 15 minute power nap, I am putting that mask on. Won't sleep without it.
Best thing I ever did was go for that sleep study. You won't regret it.

As to the overweight comment, I truly am overweight. But when I went for my initial appointment and walked in to the sleep clinic, the lobby had about 100 folks sitting around.
I only noticed a couple of overweight folks. I had assumed that apnea was only a fat person's issue.
Of those sitting around were children, old, young, only a couple overweight, OT 10s, small, slender.....every walk of life.
I asked the nurse who all these folks were and she said all were there due to apnea.
I told her I thought it was only for overweight folks like me and she laughed, stating that apnea affects every size, shape, age, race, etc.
Many veterans suffer from it or restless leg syndrome.
So don't get caught up thinking it's only fat folks like me.

That's not true at all. Anatomy plays in a big role in obstructive sleep apnea.

My wife thinks I have sleep apnea. She wants me to fo a sleep study. What does that typically require?
Others have talked about going to a place to have it done...but I did mine at home. Very easy. Just a couple of things to hook up that were very unobtrusive. You wake up the next morning and take all the stuff to the doctor. 2 weeks later they schedule an appointment and tell you the results.

It takes a while to get used to, but you get to your CPAP working for you, and it will actually make your life better.
I've been wearing one for about 12 years now, and it really makes a huge difference.

CPAP is way better than a fatal heart attack in your sleep.

Mine has a memory chip in it that records how many hours I wear it. If I fall below a certain number of hours a night, my insurance refuses to pay for it. Well, I was waking up finding that I had removed the mask during the night in my sleep. I'd find it on my chest sometimes and sometimes I'd have actually tossed it as far as the hose would reach. My insurance company said I wasn't wearing it enough so they have refused to pay for any more supplies for it. So now I'm basically stuck with a few hundred dollar dust catcher on my nightstand.

I did the study last night. Did not think I slept at all. At 1:30 AM, nurse came in and put the mask on. I closed my eyes and then heard her say "it's 6:30. Time to get up."
Took me by surprise!
