So I'm trying to get a jump on planning our 10 yr anniversary trip next summer and looking at options. Wife want's Antigua or Bahamas.... I'm not in love with leaving the states these days so I'm trying for a "tropical" feel in the U.S. We've done the Florida thing several times (Destin, Pensacola, Navarre, etc) but were thinking about the Keys as something different. This will be a trip with 3 couple friends of ours.
Who has been? What is it like? Worth doing or should I give in and do Antigua?

I just watched Bloodlines. You may find bodies or something.

Why?

Its not like she is wanting to go to Haiti.

Key West is a cool town but I think I would get bored of it after 2-3 days. A trip with 3 other couples sounds like root of the problem here

Old, nothing fancy. You will enjoy going to the state park beaches more than anything else.

I've always enjoyed Key West. Rent a convertible in Miami and drive.

The Keys are nice but it isn't the Bahamas. Go big for the 10 year!

Keys are nice, but unless you arr fishing daily it gets old after about 3-4 days in my opinion.

For a 10 yr anniv trip you could split a trip between Miami and the Keys to get a little bit of both lifestyles. Miami will offer a different nightlife (women like dancing, clubs have dancing and clubs are better in Miami), dining, shopping, etc. and key West will be more relaxed.

In all honesty, and they get ragged on here pretty much but for three couples, a wife that wants to see the Bahamas, a husband who wants to stay domestic a cruise might be the bext option for you.

No, it won't be the best 10 yr anniversary option, but I don't think splitting a three bedroom condo in Key West is either. At least on a cruise you can get some privacy.

Let the record show, I'm not crazy about the 3 couples going with us but that's women for you. At least if we do that there is a chance for a spa day for them and a fishing trip for us. Just she and I and there is probably a spa day but no fishing trip so I can live with that. I've never done a cruise and don't love the idea but that might be the best option given the circumstances.

Not sure why you would have issues with leaving the US to head to the carribean.
Bahamas wouldn't be my first choice.

They keys have lots of little areas with small nice resorts/hotels. You could combine a trip to a few of the separate islands and finish in Key West.

Hawaii is still in the US - just expensive, but awesome and tropical.

Every southwest sale seems to have cheap flights to the keys. I have never been though so I can't weigh in on the option. Following the responses though.

Do it right and rent a house in the Abacos right on the beach. It's close, private, with plenty to do for the men (great fishing) and women.

Overrated, I mean you can drive to Destin and experience the same thing in nicer places to stay

I've never been to the Keys and would love to go. My wife and I would go if we didn't have a baby at home. When the baby is older, we're going.

Agree with most here in that 2-3 days MAX before Key West gets old... I would highly recommend the Bahamas, but I also jumped down to Puerto Rico last month for a long weekend. In my opinion it was a more enjoyable trip. You get a similar atmosphere in Old San Juan as you would in Key West, but San Juan actually has beaches! Take day trips out to Culebra for snorkeling and beaches as well.

There is a lot more to the Keys than Key West. The difficult part as you said is getting 4 couples on the same page. From Islamorada down to KW, there are many, many opportunities to enjoy great day trips for fishing, snorkeling, sightseeing, kayaking, etc. Tons of state parks, Bahia Honda in the lower keys my favorite. Out of KW, visit the Dry Tortugas, great trip, good snorkeling, can fish there also. So, don't handcuff yourself to just KW. Lots of beautiful scenery to behold...
