The Florida Man of the future will understand how to balance a checkbook and make basic informed financial decisions. Can you say that about your high school graduates, Louisiana?

CNBC

Florida is officially the largest state to mandate a financial literacy course for high school graduation.

On Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed bill SB 1054 into law. The legislation was unanimously passed by both the state House of Representatives and Senate in early March.

“What the bill is doing with financial literacy is really providing a foundation for students that’s going to be applicable in their lives regardless of what path they take,” said DeSantis during a Tuesday press event. “This will provide a foundation for the students to learn the basics of money management, understanding debt, understanding how to balance a checkbook, understanding the fundamentals of investing.”

Sounds like a good idea, but who really needs to know how to balance a checkbook? How many people are writing checks in enough volume for that?

It's 2022. My mind is still blown that this isn't already mandated in every state with how big of a problem student debt is.

To be fair, with the state of the education system in LA, even if they did teach it our yutes would still be lost.

Please also teach them how to fill out a basic tax return. Especially if they are a household with only W-2s.

They'll teach the importance of budgeting and saving in school, then after school Braxton will tell his mom to stop at the Apple store on the way home because she needs to get the cracked screen on his $1,300 iPhone fixed.

Florida has taught sentence diagramming for countless years of our education, yet I couldn't diagram this sentence to save my life Economics and government were required courses for graduation, and that has made virtually 0 improvements to my fellow Florida people. It's feel good legislation that will have minimal impact, except more people will blame their high school for their bad decisions.

There are plenty of people put there under 40 who don't trust themselves with a credit card and prefer to pay cash, check or money order.

FCCLA has long had a personal component to life skills. Junior Achievers have been around for a long time too.

The problem has always been parents not wanting their kids to enroll in them over what they deemed “more meaningful” classes. Or a study skills.
