A federal judge Wednesday threatened to stop Carnival Corp. from docking its ships at U.S. ports temporarily as punishment for possibly violating probation but said she would make a decision at a hearing scheduled for June.

Carnival has been on probation for the last two years as part of a $40 million settlement for illegally dumping oil into the ocean from its Princess Cruises ships for eight years and lying about the scheme to U.S. authorities. While on probation, according to court filings, Carnival Corp. and its subsidiary cruise lines have sought to avoid unfavorable findings by preparing ships in advance of court-ordered audits, falsified records, dumped plastic garbage into the ocean and illegally discharged gray water into Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. The company also has tried to lobby the U.S. Coast Guard through a back channel to change the terms of the settlement, prosecutors allege. The company has acknowledged these incidents.

In a statement issued following Wednesday’s hearing in front of U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz, Carnival Corp.’s Chief Communications Officer Roger Frizzell said, “It appears there were some mischaracterizations made by others to the court. We intend to fully address the issues raised at today’s court conference.

“Our environmental responsibility has been and continues to be a top priority for the company. Our aspiration is to leave the places we touch even better than when we first arrived. This is only in the best interest of our guests, our company and the oceans upon which we travel.”

obviously there are Carnival ships that call NOLA home

Hopefully it includes the ones already at sea and they drop the trash on board off elsewhere.

But why? Are they doing oil changes on the open ocean? Cooking oil?

Do they not have drums or totes to store any used oil in until they get to a port somewhere and dump it?

That just doesn't make sense.

If the Greyhound of the cruise industry gets kicked out of the US, does someone else take their place as the trashy cruise line or do people get priced out of the market?

They probably have to pay to offload wastes. Dumping it was free.

They should be treating it on board with an electrochlorination process plant, but knowing a little about Carnivals maintenance history it probably is broken down and they know no one who can fix it.

Or in other words they are to cheap to fix it.

Where's the break-over between illegally dumping and legally dumping? Because US Navy ship pump and dump all the time as long as they are like 15 or 25 miles away from land. At least that's how i remember it being.

US Navy =/= Carnival Cruise Lines (Private Entity)

A side story:

When Clam Shell dredging was stopped in Louisiana after decades (rightfully) due to environmental issues, bodies of inland water (like Lake Pontchartrain) that had been murky for years due to the turbidity from the dredging process began to clear up.

The water got clearer and things that formerly couldn't be seen were seen.

That included the old lead core batteries that the USCG had been dumping for decades at the feet of the aids to navigation.

Funny how no one was disciplined over that....

my only guess would be that it would have to be in international waters... at least 12 nautical miles off any coastline

but that's only a guess

Could be bypassing an oily water separator. Plenty of ships have been caught doing this

It makes perfect sense. Its cheaper and less work to just dump it in the ocean

Carnival has a history of this type of activity in Florida. They are a very sleazy company.

Screw them.

Few people realize Carnival owns Princess and Holland America cruise lines in America , and another 4 or 5 lines in other countries.
