It was the tree hugging Obama regulations...no one seemed to listen or know but HVAC-R repairmen types. In the US it is the same thing but different variants

What happens in the vast majority of cases is that family calls their homeowner's insurer who immediately sends Servpro out to clean up. The insurer will also pay for a hotel room if necessary. Homeowner or insurer will get contractor to provide and estimate and then repair damage. Family will get check for replacement cost of items damaged by the explosion. Insurer will retain engineering firm to determine cause of explosion and then send demand letter, likely to Whirlpool, to pay for the damages. Whirlpool will have their engineers investigate and either agree or not agree to pay for the damage. If they don't agree, homeowners insurer will forward file to its subrogation attorney who will sue Whirlpool and anyone else who might be responsible (e.g. manufacture of faulty part). The case will almost certainly settle and, when the homeowners insurer recovers money, it will refund the deductible to the family.
The other typical scenario is that Whirlpool or the defective part manufacturer will hand the claim over to their liability insurer and the case will go to arbitration between the insurance companies. If there is a recovery for the homeowners insurer, the deductible will be refunded.

EPA Issues Warning on Flammable A/C Refrigerant
As one refrigerant is phased out, reports of illegal substitutes are rising
May 09, 2016
The Environmental Protection Agency is warning homeowners about an illegally marketed refrigerant for central air conditioners that poses a safety hazard to them and to the technicians that service their systems. Called R-22a or just 22a, the propane-based refrigerant can catch fire or explode. The EPA prohibits its use, which has resulted in enforcement actions—arrests and fines—against those who market and sell it.
While you may not know what refrigerant your HVAC contractor uses to recharge your system, it’s a good idea to ask the next time you get an annual tune-up. One of the most common refrigerants, HCFC22 or just R22, is being phased out because it depletes ozone from the atmosphere. The Environmental Protection Agency has a list of more environmentally friendly alternatives on its website but R-22a isn’t one of them.

I had a mini fridge that I was cleaning one day to get all the damn ice off of, and apparently I poked a hole in the freezer part and freon leaked out. I was working out of town for the week and came home to find the fridge not working. I threw all the stuff away that was inside and plugged it in and see if I could figure out what was wrong with it (didn't know it was a freon leak yet), and about an hour or two later after running the back of it was hot as frick to touch, like almost would burn me if you touch for just a second. I keep the fridge in my room in front of the window and the curtains, and luckily the week I was gone, it didn't burn the house down.
Wonder if these folks had a leak and it overheated and expoded.
