I'm not a flat earther but this one is simple. Because they're told so. 99% of people listen to what they're told as children and never research any further than that. Our governments use this knowledge of its people to pull the wool over our heads all the time. Many, many examples. God, Hitler is the most evil man that ever lived and Jews the perpetual victim, the moon landing, JFK, the worldwide child porn/trafficking network, 9/11 and most recently covid and Jan 6. All questionable at best, outright deception at worst. All taking advantage of the human being lazy and too apathetic to search for the truth. Most just believe what we are told and are content with that.

I do not believe there are many if any people who honestly believe the earth is flat. I do believe there are a lot of people who desire to be different and controversial. They feel like there is no better way to be remembered and thrust themselves to the front of a conversation than to say something ridiculously controversial. Much like today’s young people desire to go viral often by doing really stupid things and videoing it so that can share it with the world.
I guess in their minds It doesn’t matter if you’re wrong or make a fool of yourself as long as you're remembered.
In my experience the very few who honestly believe the earth is flat have many similar problems due to chronic drug abuse likely with underlying mental problems.

You can end the flat earth discussion easily.
Ask the individual if they have ever seen the sunlight on the underside of clouds or an aircraft at or around sunset or sunrise. We have all seen this at one time or another. Sunlight on the underside means the sun is below the object. This can only happen if the sun is revolving around an object that has curvature.
Also why do days last longer in our summer and shorter in our winter, yet the opposite is true for the southern hemisphere? According to the flat earth map, this would not be true at all since a flat earth has not tilt towards a sun in space.
