Our local Dr. of Geology is calling this a flash drought in BR.
More weather fear porn for clicks.
What’s next? Severe cloudy days?

Bad news sells
They have to feed the doom and gloom

I read the same thing for Nola a few days ago then it rained yesterday. Looks like there are chances of rain the next few days in my weather app.

Is there a burn ban in effect now?

No clue. I burn regardlessly but responsibly. Fire extinguisher, fire break, and a rake.

I just grab a hose and water the plants.

If you watch the weather channel, you would think the apocalypse is happening every single day.

I watched a meteorologist try to defend this term on tiktok yesterday. He insinuated that the terminology has always existed but we've never heard of it before because it's just so incredibly rare that a flash drought occurs.
I've been a massive weather nerd and have followed it since 1992 after Hurricane Andrew sparked my interest in weather and I've never heard of it before until recently. According to google, it was coined in 2002.
So they've had the term coined since 2002 but just forgot about it until it became convenient to support a particular narrative.
Weather fear porn at its finest.

Now that's an ultimate "Oxymoron" if I've ever heard one.

I had never heard of a red flag warning until last year. We get them on the regular now.

I've heard of red flag warnings for a very long time, but again, I'm a gigantic weather nerd, but yea, that term has been around for forever. "Flash drought" has not, though.
