You're either flat wrong, don't understand what I mean by Big Law, or are dealing with people in small satellite offices who are specialists (like Employment Benefits attorneys or REIT lawyers).
AmLaw 200 is not Big Law. Adams and Reese and Baker Donelson and those types are quality firms (I've worked for both), they are not big law.
Vinson and Elkins, Latham Watkins, Kirkland and Ellis, etc. are big law. And unless you're a specialist, they don't expect 1900 hours. They expect 2000. And if you're good, they'll load you up with work to pump your hours up because they want to groom you for partner. If you suck, they'll slowly blackball you until you find somewhere else to go. You can bill 1900 at these places and maybe not get fired. Less than that and you'll be on thin ice. But you sure won't make partner. Most people I know who have made partner at these firms have billed 2300 plus every year they've worked.
ETA: and if you haven't made partner by year 10, most of these places force you out. If they like you, they may help you find an in house gig at a client.
Really dude, is that how partnership track works? Defending claims for Allstate out here in the sticks, I didn't know about all that. I'm glad we have someone from the city on here to tell us about this stuff works.
I've got a classmate who just made partner at an AmLaw 100 who has never billed 2000 as an associate. I know 2-3 more (at Vinson level firms or higher) who have not and likely will not bill more than 2100 in a given year, and they'll be up in the next 24 months.
Most everyone I know who has made partner at this point didn't do it because they're billing 2300+, it happened because they either developed their own business, or more commonly, became the #2 for a significant client. These are people in corporate or CRE. I'm not advising anyone to target the minimum, I can't, but some absolutely don't have to blow past the requirement to advance.
Also, this "placed with a client" shite never happens in my experience. I don't know what companies you're dealing with, but taking our cast offs isn't something that I've seen happen, and it's certainly not something I've seen facilitated.

Why be an attorney, when a plumber, electrician, or HVAC guy can make twice as much money.......

Speaking of transactional work. When are these firms going to let those folks work remotely? Gotta be soon right? There's almost zero need to be at the office and renting space is expensive.
I'm betting within ten years.

I own a business. 65 hours a week minimum for 35 years. Peanuts.
And you're proud of this? I don't understand. I would be ashamed. I majored in an easy degree and making six figures out of college while working 30-ish hours a week. Granted I travel a lot, but everything is comped while traveling. I don't understand being proud of working that much. How have you not learned to invest or owning other businesses yourself with other cash flow? Freedom is a beautiful thing.

1900 is what I've seen to be the average for most small/mid sized firms in the South Louisiana area (absent a few exceptions in the NOLA area).
my dad's firm in laffy has no minimum. after 17 years with Preis, he said he wasnt subjecting anyone to that shite
not a huge outfit by any means, probably 14 attorneys

That's like saying a car salesman can make twice as much money. I'm sure it's very common. That aside, I can't think of any part of the legal profession which is better than climbing in attics in the summer in Louisiana.

Honestly about 98% of it depends on your inherent intelligence, and your ability to interact with people. If you are the guy who can make friends with people even as your leading them to the gas chamber, and you are quick on your feet with a commendable work product (ie you should have gone to law school). you can bill 2250, work 1450, and make about $115k.
Holy shite i hope you're not an attorney. If so, Mr. Plattsmier would like to speak wit you.

Many people in LA have a difficult time understanding that big law is not Kean Miller, Jones Walker, etc. I'll say this though, Baker Donelson is working its way to big law status, getting close to 1000 attorneys, which I guess I consider big law status.
And for what's worth, you're totally right. To make partner at a real big law firm, you better have a least a milllion dollar book of business...at least. Otherwise, you're going to have to lateral to a smaller firm or become a big law staff attorney.

I'm 99% certain you are currently in undergrad, took the LSAT and couldn't hack it, so now you're justifying your General Studies degree.

There isn’t much on TD that makes me laugh more than coming across some of the delusional shite you post like this because I know you believe it. First of all you have no idea how you would have done but more importantly you wouldn’t ever have been able to put in “real focus and effort”. You have above average smarts but are one of those people who constantly comes up with ideas but never implements them or if you do it only lasts a few weeks. You need a bitch to keep you in check more than anyone! ??
I'd love someone to go back and catalog all of SFP's ideas for making money, generating passive income, etc. Some of them are pretty outlandish, but a lot of them would have a decent chance of success if he'd ever knuckle down and seriously pursue them.

How much does a partner at a firm like Jones Walker or Kean Miller make?

So you're the reason we have shitty roads all throughout this state. You're the guy that's making a killing off of these shitty contracts and construction of roads. Thanks for fleecing us. Enjoy your money.
